We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sherri Shabazz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sherri, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My mother was all about letting me spread my wings when I was a child. If I wanted to dive into piano, cheering, tennis, or writing, she had my back, no questions asked. No “you should be this or that” stuff. Then there was my grandmother – a woman with holistic healing powers. I’d watch her create “potions”, dive into her books, doing things even medical doctors couldn’t and I’d be in awe.
My mother’s encouragement of my diverse interests and free thinking, coupled with my grandmother’s holistic healing influence, laid a strong foundation that I wasn’t even aware of until years into doing business.
The support I received and the empowerment to find my own path likely contributed to my work ethic, inspired by your mother’s example as a business woman in the 80’s and 90’s.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
You know, starting my own business was kind of a spontaneous decision. There wasn’t a grand plan or a calculated decision behind it. It all began with my followers on Facebook who anticipated my daily antics. They kept suggesting that I “do something” with this “outgoing, fearless, very open-minded” personality. This push led to the birth of an online radio show (before I knew what podcasting was).
And of course, with sharing much of my personality to strangers online, people wanted to know more about the home remedies I learned and swore by. Then the pandemic happened and after keeping my family safe, a few encouraged me to start selling my products.
From there, things just started falling into place naturally. I began offering products, services, masterclasses, and curating events. It was like the universe was pushing me in this direction. I had to start nurturing my gifts and talents, the things I was genuinely passionate about, as more than just hobbies. These gifts eventually became my career, my business, and a brand in their own right.
I’m dedicated to providing a safe space for men and women to live freely, happy and healthy. I don’t just mix products in my kitchen; I actually heal. Through nature’s medicine and my gifts. I joke and tell people that I’m a vitamin, but in reality, I’m not joking 🙃. People NEED me and that’s what sets me apart. Not my products and services, but ME. It’s not about what I whip up; it’s about me being the secret sauce. People aren’t just interested in what I offer; they straight-up NEED me, and that’s the real game-changer.
The products and services are just icing on the cake!
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Absolutely!
From the time I can remember, I had these three wild dreams: being an Author, a Pharmacist, and yup, a Sex Therapist…at the same time. The family always knew about the first two, but that last one? I kept that under wraps, afraid to spill the beans, haha. The crazy part? I ditched all three dreams, only to find myself sprinting back to them in the past decade. Doing it my way, the totally non-conventional way, but guess what? The fire for these passions never fizzled out.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Two things: the people and my authenticity.
The people supported and encouraged me from day one. They saw the talent, supported the dreams and spreaded my name in rooms I hadn’t set foot in. It’s like having my own Beyhive, seriously! They shield me from the naysayers, standing firm behind everything I tackle. Even on days when I’m not feeling 100%, they’re rocking a solid 200% confidence in me.
My authenticity is the real deal – no filters or facades. I move to the beat of my own drums, and know that when one door shuts, ten more swing wide open. Authenticity is magnetic; it’s rare, and people vibe with it. Speaking up is my thing; I dive into the tough topics and give a voice to those who might not have one.
