We recently connected with Sherri Rose-Holmes and have shared our conversation below.
Sherri, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Each year we decide to push events here in Savannah, is a risk all on its on! Savannah is a hard market!! Even well known artist have been known to cancel shows due to low ticket sales. Our event Rock-Ur-Natural hair health & Beauty expo has been going on for 5 years. Still the 150 to 200 that attend is low compared to the number of years this event has been going on. Places around us for example Jacksonville and Atlanta. Have a number of events year round with a good amount of participation from the community. Our event Street Food & Poetry Festival had its 2nd year this past September. It was a pretty good turn out considering it rained on and off the whole time. Though Savannah has shown year after year to be a very difficult event market, we take that risk to continue to host a space for the creatives and like minded people in our community. Its a risk I think is worth taking!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a multi talented entrepreneur, Model and Optician. I host 2 events annually here in Savannah GA. Rock-ur-Natural hair health & beauty expo. as well as Street Food & Poetry Festival. I have been doing annual events for the past 5 years. I Started my all natural and organic hair and skin care line called Sisternaturals over 13 years ago. I also own a mobile store and bakery that will be up and running in 2024. My bakery business is called Get caked up desserts. The events I host each year is to help small businesses as well as local musical artist to get noticed in our area. I wanted to create a space where creatives on every level could network and show what amazing talent, businesses and services we have right here in our own community!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have two! Covid and rain!!! lol! For an event coordinator these two things caused some really stressful nights! When Covid hit I had to decide rather to cancel our annual event our keep it going. I’m so glad we kept it going! It was what we all needed! Everyone just wanted to be outside!! We kept everyone safe. The event turned out better than we expected! The other issue that had me going crazy was this past September. We had our 2nd Annual Street Food & Poetry festival. It rained like crazy!!The fact that no matter what. The audience that I cater too continue to show up for me. This is what keeps me going! The need for these events and the part of the community that show up every time. I’m so thankful!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best thing to do is support! Come out to events! Shop with local small business owners. Network with creatives. Buy from locals instead of stores that already have extreme sales. Give them a chance to show that our businesses and services are a lot of times much better than what we purchase from big names. Give us a platform!! A voice!
