Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sherri Miles. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Sherri, thanks for joining us today. Early in your career, how did you think through the decision of whether to start your own firm or join an established firm?

I started my own firm, without having any experience with another firm. I started my own bookkeeping business, because I like helping people understand their books, and financial reports. Often times, small business owners, don’t understand the need of bookkeeping. CPA’s often tell their clients to find a bookkeeper so the reports refect their financial status in their business. Getting into bookkeeping was not an easy task for me to get started, because I was a shy person, and didn’t know how to approach other business owners. I started networking, and that group helped me build the confidence I needed to get the word out about Bizzy Bee.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My husband and I started a car hauling business when I was about 23. So for 17 years we were transporting cars from dealerships to auctions and so forth. I got off the road in 2013, and learned how to maintain our books, and enjoyed it. I found that I have a niche for bookkeeping! I have learned that with some of these books that I get from new clients, they are such a mess, that I look at it as another challenge. Cleaning up books is our specialty here at Bizzy Bee.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

I follow up with potential clients, I get back to new clients asap. I have learned that even in this idustry, there are quite a few bookkeepers/firms who do not respond to potential clients, and that is appaling to me. I don’t understand why. It literally takes a minute to respond to texts, or emails.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

Word of mouth is still the best advertising. I have some social media, but it seems as if Google and word of mouth is what is helping us grow.
