We were lucky to catch up with Sherrell Duncan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherrell, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
In 2013, I began using the hashtag #ImTooCreativeForANineToFive while employed at a career school in Baltimore. It became clear to me that I couldn’t confine myself to the limitations of traditional employment. Despite my enjoyment in assisting students, I felt a deep desire to explore avenues beyond those four walls. My passion lay in aiding individuals in their journey towards physical fitness and emotional well-being.
I regard myself as a creative genius because I consistently devise innovative methods to captivate and guide my audience through their healing process. I can not imagine myself working for someone again unless I REALLY have to.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Meet Sherrell Duncan, a powerhouse of authenticity and empowerment! Picture this: a nine-year-old Sherrell, soaking in sage advice like a sponge, told to “tell your story fearlessly, so it can never be taken from you.” And boy, did she take that advice to heart!
Fast forward to 2013, and Sherrell’s facing down the mighty dragon of post-partum depression and a not-so-healthy relationship. But wait for the plot twist! Instead of drowning her sorrows in a sea of chocolate and cocktails, she finds her knight in shining armor in the form of a friend with a blender and a gym membership. Smoothies replace shots, crunches replace cupcakes, and voilà! She’s shedding pounds faster than you can say “healthy lifestyle.”
Cue the hashtag #TheGoodThick! Sherrell’s transformation sparks a fire in her soul, igniting a passion to help others facing similar struggles. And thus, “The Good Thick” is born—a fitness brand as real as Sherrell herself.
But wait, there’s more! Just when you think Sherrell’s story couldn’t get any juicier, in walks Alfred Duncan, her future hubby. Their whirlwind romance leads to a surprise wedding, breaking the internet with the hashtag #ForeverDuncan. Talk about a plot twist!
But fame ain’t all it’s cracked up to be, folks. Sherrell and Alfred decide to take the reins of their own narrative, launching the “Friends Who Smash Podcast” to dish out relationship advice with a side of sass. And when life throws her lemons, Sherrell doesn’t just make lemonade—she hosts the “Dear Self Brunch” series, serving up healing and sisterhood to women in need.
But wait, there’s even more! Sherrell’s not done shaking up the status quo. She’s launched her very own podcast, “I Don’t Know Who This Is For,” where she dives deep into stories of overcoming trauma and finding healing. And let’s not forget about her latest venture—the #WalkAndTalkWithSherrell initiative, where ladies strut their stuff and spill the tea on life while burning calories.
Sherrell Duncan isn’t just an inspiration—she’s a force of nature, leading the charge for vulnerability and empowerment. So grab your popcorn, folks, ’cause this is one story you won’t want to miss!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The absolute best part of being a Creative is witnessing the incredible journey of healing and transformation unfold before my eyes. It’s like watching a caterpillar emerge from its cocoon as a magnificent butterfly. Witnessing individuals step into their power, owning up to their actions, and embracing accountability—it’s truly awe-inspiring. From mental breakthroughs to physical transformations and emotional resilience, the whole package! There’s nothing quite like seeing someone find their voice, standing tall, and reclaiming their power for the greater good.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is crystal clear: to guide women on a journey of healing from past traumas, empowering them to craft beautiful moments and lasting memories. I’m passionate about teaching the art of accountability and vulnerability, believing these qualities are the cornerstone of personal growth and empowerment. By embracing these principles, women can not only become better individuals but also inspire positive change in the world around them.
