We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sherree Rogers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sherree, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I kept telling myself that I’m going to walk away from my job and spend my time helping people. Everyone thought I was crazy because I was leaving a paying job to work for free. I had no idea how I would pay my bills or if I would love my job or not. My passion always been to help others and to put a smile on someone’s face along with myself. I walked away from my job about 10 years ago and never look back. Everyday, I struggle to take care of my bills due to lack of funding and support. It’s not my focus at all. I just live to be a blessing.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Sherree Rogers and I am the CEO of Standing Strong Mentoring Program. I always helped others since I was a little girl. As I git older, I looked forward to it. In my 30’s I decided to help people full time. During my adulthood, I became homeless lost custody of a baby to his father and became a complete mess. I told myself once I get back on my feet, I was going to help as many homeless people and individuals facing homelessness as possible. It became my passion and my life. I offer food, clothes, shoes, resources, and love. This type of work set me apart from others because I do it from my heart and I can relate to them from experience. I am proud of the blessings that I pour into people and of their accomplishments. I love hearing their stories of success. My followers know that I help from the heart and its not about money because we are self funded.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I learned the hard way that you can not partner with everyone. Alot of organizations is in it for the money and not for the people. I also learned to be careful who you partner with and take some time out to get to know them first. Everyone does not give from the heart.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my social media took forever. I started sharing pictures and videos when I do events or when I go out to help people. I started posting flyers and sharing live video with my audience. At first, I didn’t want to show people during their worst times in life but I learned that most people are more visual. They want to see you doing the work. After learning I will never get any help if people can’t see you actually doing the work, they want support you. For anyone that’s trying to build social media, I say share as much as you can and be ready for the good and the bad.
