We recently connected with Shermell. (Coco) Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shermell. (Coco) thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Since I was young, exercise was something I loved to do. I ran track, cheered, and played volleyball. Later, as I got older, walking and keeping fit were things I enjoyed. While living in Charlotte, North Carolina, I was a part of a group called Funky Fit. We worked out as a group 3 or 4 times a week. I noticed that I wasn’t sweating like the other ladies, even though I was really working hard. This made me begin doing research to figure out why I didn’t sweat like they did and how to fix it naturally. At the same time, I was introduced to essential oils. I then started mixing carrier and essential oils to make what I call today my CoCo’s Oils and Creams.
Shermell. (Coco), love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Shermell Martin. I am affectionately called CoCo by my god children. I have been in Atlanta for almost 2 years now and I am an inspiring
holistic oil enthusiast entrepreneur. Originally from Canton, Ohio; after
graduating college and teaching a few years there, I moved to Charlotte, NC. I
literally grew up in Charlotte. I taught in the Public School System and bought
my first house in Mecklenburg County. I loved to work out, so I joined Nettie
Reeves and her Funky Fit group. I began using my oil at my workout class
and people started to inquire about it more. I was shy to talk about it, but I just
used my experience as a segway to talk about my soon to be product. I would
share with them that my training thought that I was not working hard because I
was not sweating, I found out I was not a heavy sweater, but I knew it was
good to sweat during your workout. So, I led with that and shared my product
with many people for free so I can get some feedback from the ladies in my
workout class. I continued researching products that I could use on my body
that would make me sweat and was not harmful to my body. After researching
I was not only able to sweat, but it will also help remove toxins from your body.
It was not until I moved back to Ohio, and joined a different workout group
called Vision Body Fitness, that CoCo's Oils and Creams was a thing! My
trainer Andre' Belle found out about my product and put me on the spot and
gave me 2 min to tell the class about my product. From here, I started making
labels, created a website, making oils specifically for client's needs and
receiving testimonials. I have been invited to sell and host Health and
Wellness events and share about my product during Mental Health
Awareness Month. Walking in my Daughter's A Mile for Mental Health Walk
was one of my proudest moments since I was able to share it with her. I will
continue to push for people to move their bodies for at least 30 min per day
especially after mealtimes. I am so overjoyed when my clients contact me to
tell me what additional ways, they use my product since it is organic, and it is
very nurturing to the body. CoCo's Oils and Creams has been used as a foot
cream, body lotion, face and cuticle moisturizer, anti-inflammatory for Crohn
Disease to name a few.
I want my potential clients to know that I can create a special product for you if
you have allergies to tree nuts, as my cream has coconut oil in it and the liquid
oil does not as they are both great carrier oils. I use the purest essential oils
(in my opinion) to aid in breakdown of cellulite, boost metabolism, and burn
fat. I am looking for clients who enjoy a healthier more holistic approach to
applying products on your body. I would love to support you in your journey. If
you are interested in my products, please head to my website at

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I think it helps to be surrounded by business-minded people to stay motivated and on track. As someone new in town, I've had to remind myself to get out
there, let the Atlanta community know who I am and why they should know
me. I must stay on brand, so I try to look the part. Part of that means wearing
my own merch, too.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
It takes resilience to stay relevant. There's no question about that. No matter what age, you may need to fight for what you want. Staying relevant can be
tough as your body goes through different phases. Resilience is especially
needed when going through stress or weight change and you're trying to stay
in shape. The real struggle can be your mental and physical health,
perimenopause, and so on, but keeping an eye on the prize and maintaining
mental strength can help keep you in the game.
