We recently connected with Sherlynn Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Sherlynn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
The financial space is generally a career field where patience and kindness aren’t often on display. Most tax and business professionals are task oriented and have a limited tolerance for matters of the heart. At its inception I wanted to ensure that my firm and I would set a standard of listening to our clients so that we would be intuitive in how we delivered services to them. I set the standard for the firm in making sure that I always listen, with compassion, and approach each case with the intention to seek out the best possible solutions for my clients as it pertains to their tax situation.
One situation stands out to me as I recall from last tax season. I was working with a client that had a tax debt of $200,000 from a prior year. We learned, however, that this debt was based on limited information and that we in fact needed to file an amended return to correct this occurrence. Once this was completed the client’s tax bill was reduced to less than $7,000. This situation could have been avoided simply by asking the right questions in previous years and listening to the client. The time it took me to have the conversation with the client was minimal but made a huge difference in the circumstance. At The LOT we specialize in vulnerable populations and are based on a philosophy of kindness at our core. Our belief is that impactful solutions take time but are well rewarded. Imagine the difference this made for this client, not only at the time but in years to come.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Formed in August 2021, The LOT which stands for The Least Of These and is based on Matthew 25:40, was formed to serve all with a focus on the vulnerable of our population. This includes special needs families, veterans, elderly, and single parents. We specialize in utilizing tax law to help these families overcome difficult tax situations and maximize their benefits.
We provide several services including tax preparation, resolution, and planning for individuals and small businesses. We also provide small business consulting, including data visualization and insights as well as educational consulting and notary services.
Prior to launching the tax portion of the business, I spent 20 years as an educator in GA with certifications in Special Education, Mathematics, and Science. This knowledge and extensive experience positioned me to offer Educational Advocacy services by preparing for and attending IEP meetings with parents to help them secure needed services for their children.
I am most proud of being able to help my clients update their tax status and see a clear path forward financially that will impact them for years to come and create a blueprint for their descendants to follow. It is important to me, not only to earn revenue, but to do so in a way that improves the circumstances of my clients. Business with heart that reiterates the spirit of our motto “your taxes prepared with care.”
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is providing first class service which fosters referrals. Each year 50% of my new clients are referrals from existing clients. This indicates that we are operating at a level that prompts clients to refer our services to their friends, family, and acquaintances. This is the goal of our service model and has been the most effective way to build our numbers over time.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Keeping in touch with clients and updating them on new tax laws and changes is key to fostering brand loyalty. Tax law is constantly changing based on several factors including legislation and cost of living. Clients need to know that their returns aren’t just business as usual set to a wash, rinse, repeat cycle. They need to know that you are looking for new and innovative ways of making sure their tax situation is optimal as the economy and their situations change over time. To ensure they know this, I send quarterly updates out to my clients with new tax law changes, as well as meet with each of them every year to go through their current tax situation, educating them on where they stand. I also provide weekly updates on social media where they are invited to follow to discover and learn about ways they can improve their tax situation for the year to come.
