Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sherkeith Straughter . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sherkeith , thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
While growing up I always wanted to entertain. I can say the age was around 5 or 6 that entertaining was where my passion was. At the time I didn’t know what type of entertainment would be but I knew it was something I was natural at. As a young child being silly and making people laugh was second nature. In traumatic moments I just feel laughter can heal a broken soul. In a sense a compare laughter to having hope and healing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m new to the comedy world. I started on May 10, 2022 at Arlington Improv on “Open Mic Night”. With support of my friends and family I finally had the confidence to hit the stage. It’s easy to be funny around people that know you. But can you be funny and relatable to strangers. That is the question you have to ask yourself. You really won’t know you until you try. Find and your passion and just go for it. You never know what could come out of it. My personal stories set me apart from others. From being raised by extroverted family and there sense of humor molded me into the comedian am today. I know it’s just the beginning but this was made for me. I just know it is. I’m most proud of my stage presence growth and calmness. I just want people to know we all have a story to tell. And you never knows who’s listening and watching you. Just stay consistent with any craft you choose and keep that same drive you had at the very beginning of your career.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part about being a comedian is that you get a different crowd every night. So that gives you more feedback and advice from your audience. They’ll determine if you are funny or not. Even if you make one individual laugh, you’ve reached someone that can relate or understand the joke. One laughter leads to progress and validation. Just know different jokes hit with different crowds. You just have to hit the mic every week. Treat it like a sport. Every night you’re practicing the craft and sharpening the tools.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What’s driving my creative journey is my family. Seeing them work hard everyday with the drive and the same determination as their first day on the job. I just want to bring them hope and a smile on their face whenever they are down. Just making someone smile is a good feeling. Just in that moment of laughter, all their problems in life seem to disappear. To see my family happy and excited is the goal.
