We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sherita Shivers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherita, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I truly believe that mindset is everything. Anyone can be successful. We must program our mind to think positive, set realistic goals and put in the work to achieve success. Start each day with a purpose and a checklist. Check off as many items as possible. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t make it to the end. Always count small wins, because small wins became large victories. Also remember, that everyone’s definition of success may not be the same.
Sherita, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I provide custom creations for all occasions. Some of those creations include t-shirts, banners, party favors, tumblers/mugs and yard signs. I started out doing only t-shirts and tumblers, but many of my family and friends would bring new ideas to me for me to create. I rarely say no to a challenge. It has helped me to continue to expand my business. As a former elementary school teacher, I especially love designing and creating items for young children. This includes learning banners, learning binders, and educational workbooks.
I started using my love of teaching to become a craft instructor. I teach classes to other inspiring entrepreneurs that would like to start a business such as mine. Some of the classes that I offer are Cricut 101, Photoshop 101, Party Favor 101, and my newest class is Etsy 101.
I am now in the process of releasing eBooks to go along with my craft classes. The eBooks can be used as a supplement with my class or as a self-guided book.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Nothing will ever be perfect, so stop wasting time waiting for the perfect time. I have spent so much time over the years waiting on the perfect moment to do various things regarding my business. I realized that I would allow 6 months-1 year pass and still not release items, because I was waiting on them to be perfect. I have now learned to just get the content out there and make revisions as needed.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
My business has been self funded. I started purchasing my equipment when I was still working as a full time teacher. My husband has also surprised me with some of my equipment as just because gifts. Now that the business is up and running, I reinvest in the business with the profits from sales.
