We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sherita Moss. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sherita below.
Sherita, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
It takes a lot of discipline for sure. I think of all the years and commitment I have put towards impressing my former boss and former coworkers when I was working for corporate America, The times that I will show up to work, sick, depressed, the birthday parties and ladies nights I couldn’t go to because I knew I had to be at work the next day… I feel like if I could show up for the man, I for damn sure should have that same energy to show up for myself, and for something that I am extremely passionate about.
It also has to take commitment and accountability. If things go wrong, it’s all on you to figure out how to make it right, how to push forward.. and how to ensure that you will never put yourself or your business in that position ever again. It also takes creativity and innovation. Yes, things that you did might have worked last year, but let’s figure out how to make it better in the next coming years I keep a wall full of memes on my phone and out of all of those I remember Amazon and Netflix how they started in the garage and Netflix started with selling DVDs and look where they are now.
Sherita, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Moss Kouture was created in 2020. The fashion empire’s mission is to create statement making pieces in hopes to inspire all young spirited individuals to embrace the freedom of self expression; with an unapologetic attitude and without the expensive price tag. The founder and designer, Sherita Moss, is originally from the south side of Chicago and grew up on Minneapolis, Minnesota was. She was born into the world of dance and twirled her way onto the runway shortly after sneaking into a drag show at the age of 14 where she was crowned the next Naomi Campbell . Sherita was a former foster kid who was also fed up with being bullied for not being able to afford to wear designer clothes, so she would completely alter the clothes her mom bought from secondhand stores giving herself a fresh trendsetter reputation, which still lives on to this day. Moss Kouture specializes in Luxury Custom, Couture and everyday wear designs using both upcycled and scrap fabric materials. Her designs are usually a full range of bold colors, geometrical shapes romantic and abstract patterns and a razzle dazzle of glittery materials for the finish. Each of her collections are created to spread a message or tell a story within the designs. The Moss Kouture brand believes that we can all coexist in this world that we all love… and it starts with wearing whatever we feel with confidence and personality.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Sure! So Al OT of people don’t know this… but one of the ways I was able to find my business os through myself and my former employer. I think people will call that bootstrapping? But yeah, any amount of money that I got from my check, went to my kids, my bills, and whatever was left over I put it into my business. And that was going all good and well open till about a year ago, when I found out that both of my two youngest sons have autism. we chose to have them back to back so that they can grow up and be close to one another, both in age and in life. My husband and I did not know anything about our sons having autism and we did not see the signs until after they were both around one and two years old. Both their schedules alone are so much more intense if you put my business and personal schedules together, so much that I actually ended up losing my job. I think of all the other mothers and fathers out there who may have been going through a similar situation, if not, may be more severe than my own, and I gave myself two options: I could cry, I could quit, and I can use this situation as an excuse to feel sorry for myself, and why it is impossible for me to pursue my dreams OR I can create a way to balance, my kids therapy schedules, and still make time to continue developing my business, full-time and instead of using this situation as an excuse, I can use it as the ultimate reason to continue to push forward and be an inspiration and testimony for any other families who may be experiencing the same things that me and my family are.
Have you ever had to pivot?
This industry can be very cutthroat, one of the most pivotal moments in my business, which also affected my life, is that you really have to be selective with who you do business with. The first time people show you who they are in business you better believe it and take them as they are, and not by the potential you believe they can become. While there may be some big names out there that you may get the opportunity to work with, and as exciting as that may be, you gotta protect yourself, protect your business, put everything on paper… your business is your baby! You’re going to do whatever is in the best interest of your baby, right? Because please believe everyone else is doing exactly that whatever is in the best interest for them do you have to have that same mindset to do was in the best interest for your business . while word of mouth might still be a contractual agreement in some states, I just like everything on paper nowadays..
