Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sheriline Phillips. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sheriline thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I was always that young girl that wanted to help people out the best that I could. I remembered living in Haiti, how I gave a homeless person the only twenty dollars that I had. While the years started passing by, I knew that I would be helping people somehow. I never knew that it was going to be me helping people to regrow their hair and gaining more self confidence. My mission is to help people that feel as if they’re hair can not grow and help those that have some form of scalp irritants.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Sheriline Phillips. I am a licensed cosmetologist in Tennessee. I am the owner of JEps Premium Hair Oil. I was born in Port-au-Prince Haiti. I lived in Port-Au-Prince for eight years. I moved to America in 1994 with my parents and siblings. It’s safe to say that I’ve always been fascinated with hair. I remember right before moving to America how I braided my aunt’s hair for a wedding. My late mother used to braid hair, needless to say that I got my passion and skills from her. Not long after we moved to America my mother started making a name for herself by being a braider. Fast forward to two years later. My siblings and I got adopted due to my mother’s passing and my father not being stable enough mentally to support us. By the age of twelve I kind of had an idea of what I wanted to do with my life. At the age of fifteen I would go on to braid hair almost daily, but mostly on the weekends. While most of my friends were hanging out on the weekends, I was always busy either braiding or styling hair. At fifteen my father saw that I was serious about hair, he and my uncle built me a small salon in his backyard. It was pretty amazing! It felt good to have someone that believed in my dreams just as much as I did. After I graduated from high school I went on and gained my associate degree. My dream of owning my salon did come right away. It wouldn’t be until fourteen years later that I would go on and have my salon. At the age of twenty-two I was in a car accident that led me to not being able to do hair for about a year and a half. I would be lying to you if I said that I was ok with the break, but I was not. During that year and a half I went into major depression. This is why comparison kills. I was sitting back watching my classmates going on to do great things with their lives and in their careers, here I was doing absolutely nothing at that time. That period in my life taught me so much. It was my father that really talked life back into me. My passion was to always help people feel and look their best. In 2016 I started working on a product that I had no clue would change so many lives. I went to name that product JEPS Premium Hair Oil. JEPS was created out of desperation. Many women tend to have luxurious hair while pregnant, however I lost an astronomical amount of hair due to stress, mainly from the unknown of becoming a mother. While I was going through the battle of losing my hair, I was fortunate to have a client that was searching for a new stylist to help her regrow her hair. I remember telling my client that she was going to be my guinea pig. My client accepted the challenge. This particular client was eighty years old. Yes, eighty. People tend to think that once you’ve reached a certain age that your hair will no longer grow back. That’s not always the case. A lot of factors go into the reason why a person’s hair never grows back. After about a month of using JEPS on my client we immediately noticed some changes. For once her scalp was not irritating her on the daily. Secondly, the area that my client no longer had hair in was growing back. By month five it was clear evidence that JEPS was working. My company has had many men and women to thank us for gaining their confidence back. After months of using JEPS on my regular clients, they started noticing major differences in their hair and scalp as well.. JEPS was going to be a product that I kept to myself and my clients, however I remembered what I prayed for. I prayed that I would be the one to help people see their overall beauty and JEPS unbeknownst to me was doing just that. I’m so proud to know that with prayer I’ve created a product that is changing lives without any chemicals in it. I am happy to know that self love and confidence are being restored. Like anything that works and works really well. It will take a little time. There are four phases to hair growth, four. Any company that promises you five inches of hair in one month is lying to you. I know we’re living in a society that wants everything fast. Fast doesn’t equate to being the best. If anyone is going through difficulties growing their hair back or growing it at all, give us a try. As the owner of JEPS, I’m living proof that it works. I answer questions all the time on all my social media platforms pertaining to hair. After giving birth to my last son in 2022, I decided to close my salon and focus on my family. While giving birth to my son we both almost lost our lives, so that further sealed the deal for me to be a stay at home working mom, if that makes any sense. Staying at home gave me a better opportunity to completely focus on JEPS and grow it the way it should be grown.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Starting a business online where no one knows your name is extremely hard. However, consistently showing up for your business as if you would a regular nine to five is the key to growth. In 2020 in the thick of Covid was my tyring time. I went months without making any sales and of course everyone was scared to make any form of purchase. I wanted to give up due to not seeing the income coming in and not knowing when COVID was going to be over with. Salons were shut down as well therefore I did not have any income coming in. My household went from a two income household to now living off of one income. However, giving up on something that I prayed for was not an option. I knew that if I did not give up on my business it was going to eventually pick back up. I’m having to rebuild all over again as I’m doing this interview. Towards the end of 2022 my house caught on fire, so was the area that was designated for JEPS. If you know that you have a product that works do not give up on it. You’re going to have bumps along the way, but don’t give up on your dreams or visions.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that I’m not in this by myself. I went into this business thinking that I could do it all by myself. Doing it all by myself was causing me more time away from family and getting less done. I’ve always felt like superwoman, however if you’re wanting to scale in your business it takes a team.
