We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sherika Gibson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sherika below.
Sherika, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success can be achieved through a combination of hard work, determination, perseverance, continuous learning, adaptability, and the ability to set and pursue goals effectively. It also involves being open to feedback, willing to take risks, and maintaining a positive attitude even in the face of challenges. Finding a balance between personal and professional life is also important for long-term success.
Sherika, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Sherika Gibson is a remarkable woman from the Bahamas, who bravely survived the devastating Hurricane Dorian and emerged as a serial entrepreneur. Despite facing immense challenges and losses, including the destruction of her salon in 2019, Sherika persevered with determination and resilience. In 2021, Sherika launched her own product line called Envius, which has since gained recognition and success. Envius products are now available in beauty supply stores across the Bahamas, on global platforms like Amazon and eBay, as well as in stores throughout Florida, other states and countries. I am proud that Envius products have the chance to be featured in the beauty market. These products stand out for their uniqueness and are characterized by high quality delightful scents and pleasing textures. Examples include the popular edge control and foam products. The edge control is a water-based formula and is non-flaking, non-greasy, and provides a long-lasting hold for up to 72 hours. On the other hand, the foam product carries a pleasant strawberry scent, offering a soft texture that helps in defining curls. As a product distribution company, we aim to bring these exceptional products to a wider audience.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Envius never received any external funding due to lack of belief in the vision and repeated rejections. As a result, I’ve used personal savings to fund the business. Sales proceeds were reinvested into purchasing more inventory. When bank loans were not an option, my mother stepped in to provide funding for larger inventory needs to supply stores.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started working a job where the minimum wage in my country was $210 weekly. When i got pregnant with my son, his father had to pay all the bills. Feeling the need for more financial security and with the responsibility of helping to provide for my child, i realized i had to leverage my talent. By developing a client base and working from home, i started making more money than i did at my job. Eventually, i earned the title of “entrepreneur” through my hard work and dedication.
