We recently connected with Sherice Baptiste and have shared our conversation below.
Sherice , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The mission of Magpie’s Mirth is to provide affordable, accessible healing to all, as well as provide people with the tools and means to heal themselves.
It all started out with scented candles, funnily enough and researching the Spiritual properties of herbs and flowers to draw in particular energies or intentions. Before long i had expanded my research into making all kinds of different curios. Once I saw the real emotional and spiritual gratification people were receiving from meeting and me and trying my products, it was inevitable to truly follow the path of a healer.
I was once someone who was in great need of healing and found upliftment through Spirituality, and the greatest comfort through my business. I’ve met a lot of amazing people along the way on my spiritual journey, so its really important to me to help others on theirs in return.

Sherice , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I first got into my business as I was going through a hard time, and learnt about spells and intentions to change and manifest. I initially was just doing this for myself, but before long my scented intention candles and crystal charm amulets started to gather attention and I tried my hand at selling professionally.
Soon enough, I was out selling and networking at markets and workshops.
At its core my work is based around the gothic / horror, fantasy with the magick being within the structure of traditional pagan religions which is the subject of much controversy. My interests developed some more and I began studying healing and Spiritualism.
As my practice has expanded and I’ve become qualified to practice Reiki, this has added a deeper spiritual element and I became an Energy Healer and Spiritual Apothecary. So the spiritual items I started off with, are now Spiritual Perscriptions to aid my clients along their healing journey.
I think what makes me different from others is that I’m completely open and non-judgemental. I always get it; I dress emo/ goth and others will misinterpret me as ‘dark’ or find my stall weird and be resistant to me. I understand these are the kinds of preconceptions that make people distance themselves. Also, its not all financial, we can do pay as you can. Healing is for all.
I now provide Reiki Healing sessions, meditation workshops, tarot and Mediumship Readings, as well as selling my healing and intention candles, jewellery, washes and much more. My healing clients are usually people that are having a hard time either physically, emotionally or spiritually and are seeking some additional help or support. My other clients are those that are interested in fantasy, gothic, traditional religions, spirituality and curios. Often people come to my stall just to have a chat or ask questions, and I’m happy with that too.
I’m most proud of building this business from scratch all by myself, and kept on going to get to where I am now despite any curveballs. I’ve never given up, built something beautiful that I can share with the world, and couldn’t be prouder.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I got the initial capital from my business from working full time at Domino’s Pizza. I absolutely hated it, so I picked up overtime working ridiculous hours so I had money for materials and advertising. Any hour I wasn’t working, I was making stock (as everything is handmade), listings, photography, advertising, social media, in person sales. For a good year, there was no downtime so that I had enough capital and recognition.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Business success is not solely based on others perception of success, but your own business’ milestones and achievements.
My business has and still does grow very quickly, and its unpredictable.
With all the ideas, doors and opportunities that have opened up since I founded Magpie’s Mirth it came to a point in my business journey where I had too many different things going on and it was like I was sinking under the pressure of my own own success.
Everyone was always so impressed, or critical I always felt like I had to be better than the last time the public saw me. I put too much pressure on looking like I was growing and doing well that the fun was getting lost.
So what I had to do was refine. I try go of all the stressors and preconceptions and just stuck with what I loved. Since I let go of everything that wasn’t serving me, space really has been made for the new.
