We recently connected with Sherese Patton and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherese , thanks for joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
Wow, I think about this a lot. My first client was Jerica Stacks, who owned Quora Beauty. Quora Beauty was an organic cosmetics brand that used all-natural materials to make their products and conducted no animal testing. She was not only my client, but she was my project during my master’s degree program. During that time, we had to have an actual client and everything we did on this project for the project, was live! Everything from the website development, to the photoshoots, to gaining media attention, we did live and had to document and give analytics. She gave me exposure to having an actual client.
When I made my first dollar, I was contracted to gain press for a radio host. He saw my content from working with Quora Beauty and reached out to me via Instagram about doing some work for him.
Working with these two, gave me the motivation and thought that I can do this!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I found myself uncertain about my career path. Landing a job in marketing turned out to be more challenging than I had expected. I remembered excelling in a Public Relations course during college, which sparked my interest in exploring the PR industry further.
When I learned that my cousin had started a beauty brand, I saw an opportunity to gain experience and build my portfolio. I offered my services pro bono, which allowed me to get my foot in the door. Eager to deepen my knowledge, I pursued a master’s degree in Public Relations, which I completed in September 2019.
With newfound confidence and expertise, I decided to launch my own agency. This marked the birth of The Patton Agency, which has been thriving for the past six years.

Have you ever had to pivot?
At The Patton Agency, our constant vision is to adapt and cater to the changing needs of our clients. Recently, we have encountered business owners who may not have the budget to sustain a regular PR Contract but want to work with us. To address this, we have diversified our services to include VIP Consultation offerings.
This strategic shift stems from our dedication to inclusivity, believing that every business, irrespective of its size or financial resources, should have access to professional support. Our VIP Consultation services aim to deliver personalized, strategic guidance and practical insights enabling business owners to effectively handle their PR and marketing activities.
During these consultations, we delve into each client’s specific obstacles and objectives. Subsequently, we offer tailored strategies that can be independently implemented, providing a more adaptable and economical solution. This hands-on approach equips business owners with the necessary tools and knowledge to propel their own success forward.
Expanding into VIP Consultations allows us to extend high-quality PR and marketing services to a wider audience. This marks an exciting progression for The Patton Agency, and we are enthusiastic about assisting more businesses in flourishing through this innovative service.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Well, when I first started in PR, I knew I needed to build a strong portfolio to showcase my capabilities, that was also the first piece of advice I ever received, build your portfolio! So, I took on a lot of pro bono work in the beginning. It was a strategic decision because I wanted to demonstrate my skills across a variety of projects and show what I could do. Each project, even though unpaid, was a valuable opportunity for me to learn my craft, expand my network, and prove my dedication to delivering high-quality PR services.
Since then, over the past few years, I’ve worked freelance, taking on numerous short-term projects. This phase of my career has been incredibly rewarding. Each project has taught me something new and helped me develop my skill set. I’ve had the chance to work with diverse clients and tackle various challenges, which has been instrumental in my growth.
Now, I’m eager to transition into a more stable role within the PR industry. I want to continue building my brand and increasing my brand awareness. My focus is on leveraging all the experience I’ve gained to make a significant impact and contribute meaningfully to the field
