Sherecca, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Hey there! I just wanted to start by expressing my love for, well, love. It’s been a part of me for as long as I can remember. I mean, I was a total hopeless romantic even back when I was a kid watching Lion King on an old VCR. That scene where Nala and Simba reconnect in the jungle while “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” plays in the background? Man, it used to bring tears of joy to my eyes. Yep, that just revealed my age, haha!
As I grew older, my passion for love and capturing those moments only grew stronger. When I decided to pursue photography as a career, I knew that my focus would be on families and couples. And let me tell you, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. There’s just something so incredibly fulfilling about those photo shoots, and I want everyone to have the chance to experience that same joy.
Now, let’s talk about my artistic vision. I’m all about capturing the beauty of black, interracial, and POC couples and families in natural settings. It’s a powerful and mesmerizing sight, and it’s what I strive to showcase in my work. When a client books a photo shoot with me, I like to provide them with a visual, like a mood board, to help them see themselves in the poses, outfits, and settings. And you know where I go to find inspiration? Pinterest, of course! It’s like a treasure trove of stunning photos. So, I would search for images of families and couples surrounded by nature, because that’s the aesthetic I wanted to bring to life.
But here’s the thing that really got to me: as a black creator, it was disheartening to realize that there was a lack of representation in the search results when I looked for “couples and families in nature.” Even when I specifically searched for “black families and couples in nature,” I barely found any relevant photos. It was definitely a moment that sparked a fire in me. I knew I had to take action to make sure that underrepresented communities in nature photography are represented on major platforms. It’s a cause that I feel incredibly passionate about.
So, that’s basically my story. I’m on a mission to capture the beauty of love and showcase the diversity of families and couples in natural settings. It’s an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful to be able to share it with the world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Sherecca Frazier, a proud Capricorn hailing from the lively town of Riverdale, GA. I come from a big, vibrant family filled with people who have a knack for dry humor. Growing up, I always had a flair for creativity, and I had this gut feeling that art and creativity would play a significant role in whatever I pursued in life.
One particular moment stands out vividly in my memory. It was back in elementary school when our teacher handed us a paper with Binky Barnes from the show Arthur on the front. Our task was to write a short story based on the image. The words came flowing effortlessly, and my teacher was incredibly impressed. She even eagerly anticipated the next chapter of my story!
But let me tell you, my journey to where I am today hasn’t been a smooth ride. I faced my fair share of setbacks due to my rebellious behavior, which resulted in me not graduating high school on time. It was a tough realization when all my friends graduated, and I didn’t. Fortunately, my dad suggested that I attend the Job Corps in Albany, GA, which turned out to be a pivotal turning point in my life.
During my time at Job Corps, I fell head over heels for this guy with an incredibly unique country charm. It felt like he spoke in cursive! He took me home to his town one weekend, and I remember being completely smitten by the vast open land, the fresh air, and his stories of his family’s land ownership. It was in those peaceful moments, filled with love and nature, that I rekindled my own adoration for both.
After completing the Job Corps, I made the bold decision to remain in Albany and pursue my education at the local community college. Graduating with my Associate of Applied Science in Design and Media Production Technology, with a major in photography, felt like a significant accomplishment. Once I finished college, I returned home and started capturing precious moments through photography, focusing on my family and friends from high school.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the best parts of my job is the feeling I get from knowing that I am not just capturing moments for people, but also becoming a special part of their unique story. It fills me with joy to think that even if the family I photographed just a couple of days ago were to go through changes in their relationships, their children and future generations will always have these memories.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
To be honest, no. I’ve learned that everything comes to you right when it’s supposed to.
