We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sheratta Irby a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sheratta thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I obtained a degree in Health information Management, and I did outreach I wasn’t sure what area I wanted to use it in but I knew I always wanted to help people and to give back so God ended up putting in place to be a college professor for 8 years and while doing that i was introduced to Homecare by my cousin whom walked me through the process of getting started. The process was rough learning how to keep going even when I had no clients at all learning how to keep building even when the funds were not there and continuing to know God had me covered during the rough days when I didn’t know if my homecare would stay open and continuing to run my women’s organization Be That Chick feeding into other women and giving back while i was barely making it. I had to do more reading, more networking, take more classes and continue to stay out in the community in order for my business to gain clients and employees but I had to also make sure that I stood behind the motto of putting God first and providing services with love which have brought us a long way.
Sheratta, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi My Name Is Sheratta Irby I am the Founder of Be That Chick Women’s Organization Teaching Women to be all God created them to be no matter what they have been through in life. We do this by outreach, workshops, health and wellness, financial literacy, and so much more. I’m also the Owner of Astonishing Angels Homecare in which we assist seniors to be able to stay in their own homes and receive exceptional assistance from our amazing aides (angels). Also we help our seniors to get the resources they need. I am a mother of 3 amazing kids that keep me going and on my toes. I have always had a heart for people and always gave back . I always wanted to make sure that everyone has the resources to not only survive in life but also to thrive in life so that is what made me start both of my businesses and organization. I have been through a lot in life and God has still had his hand on my life and I want people to see that God still has a hand on their life also. I also want individuals to receive exceptional services because they deserve it. What I think people should know about my brand and business is we are the real deal we love our clients and we give exceptional services and we go over and above and with Be That Chick we care about our women and building our community as a whole where we all can win and we reach back to grab others.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Something I had to re-learn is just to pray about it. There is more to it than that the Bible says faith without works is dead. You have to be willing to put in the work a lot of times. We ask God for a business or for things and we are not willing to do our part and when we don’t do our part we struggle in business and in life. If we want something in life we have to be willing to put in the work and also be willing to learn what we don’t know. Reading is so important because there is a lot we just don’t know and there are so many books and videos to help us in those areas we just have to take the time to find the resources and apply them to our life.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing a team wow this journey has been a lot .One thing I had to learn is I am the one leading the team but also God is the one leading me so I have to check in with him throughout this journey. In leading a team you have to have a vision and you have to stick with it whether others see it or not and you have to be able to lead but also teach your team that change will come and they have to stay ready for it. Also we have to stick with our mission and not change it or stir away from it and sometimes you have to be ok with letting individuals go that don’t want to be a part of what your business represents. Also make sure your team is trained well so they can be the very best.
