We recently connected with Sher Toro and have shared our conversation below.
Sher , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I definitely wish I had started my business sooner. I have always had a passion for beauty and have been dabbling for fun in the industry for over 20 years. But I didn’t start my makeup business until a year and a half ago at age 42! I feel like I wasted so much time and energy on careers that didn’t suit me. I also find that my business is very physically demanding (with lugging all the equipment and being on my feet all day at weddings, etc.) I would’ve had more energy and stamina in my younger years! I think I could have built a stronger empire if I had started in my twenties!
Sher , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a professional makeup artist, as well as a beauty influencer. I started my blog 3 years ago and it really took off. It was so fulfilling, I felt I was finally doing something I felt called to do. Then I started my makeup business a year and a half ago from scratch, providing pro makeup services to local clients. I particularly serve the wedding industry and find that the majority of my clients are brides wanting makeup on their wedding day. Between blogging and serving clients, I stay extremely busy!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is my bread and butter! As an influencer, I studied and learned all the Instagram strategies and applied them consistently. Not a day went by that I wasn’t creating content and posting with strategy. It takes getting out there and really being unafraid to network and market yourself to others. In the beginning, it was the other bloggers and beauty brands I met online that opened new doors for me. Over time, each new connection led to another until I had built a large following. Social media is also how most of my clients and local prospects find me as well. I would say it has been the biggest key in my business!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to learn not to sell myself short. Always know your worth in business. Set your prices for your value and time and don’t let people make you waver on that.. It’s so easy to undervalue yourself and lower prices, thinking it will attract more customers (especially when you are new to the market.) But I found that setting the price too low was sometimes a deterrent to clients. I had to learn to set a lot of boundaries and not waver on them. Otherwise, you get burned out very easily.
