We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shenilla Mentore. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shenilla below.
Alright, Shenilla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Everyone has their own definition of “success”. Some may feel like it’s related to the amount of money made or the popularity. I link success with freedom. If I can make this project/business work multiple times in multiple ways consistently, where I’m not working as hard and I’m free to do other things while the business runs itself. That’s success!
Shenilla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Shenilla Mentore founder and owner of Solee collection. I created this business purely off of my love for candles. I’ve always wanted to be a successful business owner, but I wasn’t sure where I would start. After months and months of research and testing I finally found the perfect candle with the cleanest burn, and long lasting unique scents. My goal with this business was not solely to create a product to sell and earn money. I wanted to create something unique, something made with love, and to educate all of my customers on the importance of self-care.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Although my social media has a lot more growing to do. Social media presence is a must! You have to find which social media platform works best for your business, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook etc. for my business, Instagram works great! I build up anticipation for a new scents by doing countdowns, sneak peaks, and hints. Professional pictures and videos are also helpful, I did a lot of high-quality photo shoots and that draws peoples attention to your product/business.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A simple lesson I had to unlearn, was being ok with doing things out of the ordinary. I assumed during the fall season I had to have a pumpkin scented candle. I don’t! I learned that you can be as unique as your audience will allow you to be. I also used to overwhelm myself by creating full collections with 4-5 candles every few months. Until I realized that there aren’t any rules to how many candle options you should have. I quickly learned that I could release two scents or three scents at a time if I chose to. Just because you started your business a certain way doesn’t mean you have to continue it that same exact way. You can grow, learn, and change!
