We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shena Canty a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shena, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I first knew that I wanted to pursue my art professionally was after having my band for three years. Life happened to a point where I no longer wanted to exist. I wanted to not live anymore. Luckily my small tribe of friends and family got me back together. After that, I chose to put energy into music for healing not only for myself but for others who can relate as well.
Shena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
How I got into the music industry was being in bands auditioning for various shows and competitions throughout the years to see if I had something. After having my own band for about 3 years and people suggesting I need to become an individual artist I wasn’t really comfortable with that at first because I’m like.
I kind of like being in the background a bit. After hey tragedy I took the energy and put it into my own music. From there it’s been up it let me know that I was on the right path.
I’ve earned my degree in music technology I will eventually go back for music therapy. I believe music is very healing on so many levels. I’ve recently gotten into a modeling, because people started approaching me about it. I never thought of myself as one but a good friend of mine said if they see you that way then own it.
With each one of my music tracks I have out right now I am working on creating merchandice specifically for each track.
The one that I currently have out now is the best seller I’ve created mixed Rum drinks created to look like, tastes like each one of my track. I want people to taste my music.
I also have a fictional book out called Speak Samone , it was written by Nikesha Browning. This book is based around my life even though it’s fictional, there are Hidden Truths and gems throughout the story.
I have other Merch as well shirts , hoodies lighters and things of that nature. And of course my music which people can find on all major platforms.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me it’s not about fame it’s not about any of that stuff , what I want to live comfortably ? of course yes LOL. But the most rewarding aspect of creating art( at first I was unsure of how people would receive my music) is having people be able to identify and healing them in some kind of way, or if it makes them happy or makes them feel sexy that is the most rewarding part of me.
I care a lot about people when it comes to my art it is the most rewarding feeling when people appreciate it and they let me know that they support me or just keep pushing you and rooting you on.
And even though I’ve never looked at myself as an inspiration to anyone on this planet. It does make me feel good to know that I inspire people.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I feel like non-creatives or people who don’t know much about the music industry or getting into it, will never understand the sacrifice that we make.
They get to see the finished product they get to see the Glam of it they get to see the music videos ,they get to hear our music but they don’t get the struggles that come along with it the ups and downs the tears, the self-doubt at times.
I also feel like they don’t really understand how important it is to support your local artist. And how and how easy it really truly is, from Simply sharing our music with their friends and family by simply streaming or purchasing the music or our merchandise.
That’s one part that has baffled me for the longest time it’s something that I don’t think they get a grasp on unless you really start crunching down the numbers I think people feel like oh you have music out you’re making money on it it’s Pennies on a dollar or however the saying goes.
