Shemika, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
I serve and assist the underserved daily….. Whether it’s seniors on a fixed income who have aged or are priced out of their current life insurance policy, Clients who do not have perfect health or pre-existing conditions and feel they cannot get coverage. People who have coverage but do not understand how it works. Retired individuals who may be at a loss since the job is either reducing or eliminating coverage. Persons like me who don’t fit the standard height weight chart narrative. All of these persons have a right to coverage and making sure that their affairs are in order and family is left burden less when that time comes.
Shemika, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Shemika Brown native of Maryland. Divorced single mom of twins. I was self-employed prior to getting into insurance and wanted to get into a field that offered residual income. I wanted the opportunity to build something that I myself did not have to manage daily and could eventually hand over to my children.
I am a Final Expense Specialist and licensed life insurance agent. I assist my clients and their families on the worst day of their lives by ensuring that their beneficiaries are not taken advantage of or emotionally overspending. My clients that are in the DMV (as I’m licensed in over 10 states.) enjoy the fact that once gone I will be there to accompany the family with making final arrangements as well as have a service that price shops and allows my clients to be a cash paying client at the funeral home. My clients mostly seniors have peace of mind knowing their final affairs are recorded and in order.
I am most proud of my ability to educate my clients so that they not only have their customized plans but understand what they have. My ability to show up and be reliable. That along with liberal underwriting allows me to assist persons even with chronic illnesses and conditions. For example, cancer, dialysis patients, mental illness, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attack clients can know the peace of mind of getting their affairs in order.
What sets me apart from other agents is that I become family. My clients know they can call on me for ANYTHING.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Living and operating by that mantra has worked wonders for me in business and everyday life. Making sure that the people that I interact with are not only seen but also heard. Treating others as I would like myself and family to be treated. Being adamant about my word and being determined to under promise and over deliver as opposed to the opposite has really helped me to stand out amongst so many other typical life insurance agents.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Prior to the pandemic I thankfully transitioned from face-to-face presentations and sales to assisting my clients via the telephone. Making this pivot allowed me during the pandemic to already be ahead of the game. Also assisting clients by phone allows me to help so much more clientele. I was no longer limited to just the DMV area. I am now licensed in 10 states and plan to acquire more. Every so often don’t be afraid to take inventory and consider how you can effectively service and assist more clientele. Doing that keeps you ahead of the curve and clients appreciate someone who has a pulse on all things new and upcoming.
