Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shemeka Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shemeka, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I believe consistency, patience and discipline are what matters most in achieving success. Success takes on a very different meaning for each person, and unfortunately, the road to it, is never straight but if you have consistency, patience and discipline you’ll surely achieve it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a film and television actress, and the owner of BYC Home Décor.
I have been in the entertainment industry for 20 years. I started as a background actor, transitioned to industrials, commercials, print modeling, film, television, writing , directing, and producing.
I launched Be You Candles in September 2020, making coconut wax candles and wax melts. This year Be You Candles has expanded to BYC Home Decor. We are now a unique brand infusing homes with beautiful scents and luxury décor.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Yes, we sell on several eCommerce platforms, our website, beyoucandles.com is primary. In addition, we have storefronts on Amazon, Facebook, & Instagram.
One of the cons to having several platforms is fees that are associated with each site, that’s the cost of doing business but the pro to selling on several platforms is exposure. We are meeting the customers were they are, and allowing them to shop directly with us without having to leave the site they are on.
The more convenient and positive you can make a shopping experience for your customer, the higher the likelihood they’ll become a repeat customer and tell their family and friends.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest myths in starting a business is that you need all of your own money to do so. That is where I made a grave mistake. Rather than seeking out financial opportunities, to help offset startup costs, I was using only, my own money from my 9 to 5 to fund my business. What I should have been doing was seeking collaborative opportunities between my personal and other resources. When I began to network, I was exposed to small business grants and entrepreneurship programs that gave insights on moving smarter as a business owner.
