We recently connected with Shemayah Clemons and have shared our conversation below.
Shemayah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
Contrary to assumption, I’ve never had a paid job in the big business wellness industry, and a few years ago I wouldn’t even be able to imagine myself concerned with the wellness of other people—let alone my own wellness. Thankfully, when I decided to dedicate my studies to holistic health and wellness, and really invest my time in building an online community of people I could share my findings with, I was blessed with the opportunity to sell one of the most powerful detoxes in the United States, the “Herbal Cleanse & Tonic Combo”. Amidst looking for a job to fund my holistic health degree program at the time, I personally connected with the founder of the small-owned wellness business, Paul, from Paul’s Unique Choice. Being able to exchange what we both knew about herbs, plant-medicine, the anatomy of the body, and how all these things work harmoniously, opened a door for me. Not only was I able to try the famous Cleanse & Tonic Combo myself, but he offered me to be a distributor after I shared my positive review with my growing social media community. I wouldn’t, and still to this day don’t consider my role as a distributor a job, but more so a responsibility to enlighten people all over the world of the healing resources and tools we have access to! Before this opportunity presented itself, my goals were to find a standard part-time job in retail—something that I could stomach—and save up enough money to get me through school and allow me to afford more herbs, plants, products, foods, and other things that were essential to my own healing and holistic health research! Today I can still say that I’m happy with where I am, what I do, and when I get to do it because it’s empowered me to be able to work for myself and serve the people on my own terms!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m just a woman whose poor health and lifestyle choices caught up to her at a young age. My brand, ancient artery™️, represents the active choices and decisions I made—and still make everyday—to take charge of my health and practice better self-care. Being in the industry of holistic wellness isn’t something most people just yearn to do all their lives, but when my life was pretty much saved by taking a holistic approach to my chronic illness, I felt indebted to God and the practice. Today, I’m able to help people find the root of their sickness, and hope for their healing by pointing them in the direction of useful tools and resources. As a holistic wellness specialist, I sell both tangible and digital wellness products and offer coaching and consultation services to people interested in knowing where to find and how to apply these tools. I work to inform my clients and customers about the difference they can make in their health by practicing daily habits that promote balance and healing internally. My brand, ancient artery, stands up for those who’ve always had hope that they could heal but were confused on where to start. I’m not your average health coach, I’m a guide who helps you paint possibilities for your healing while acknowledging realistic factors such as environment, accessibility to products, mental state of mind, personal relationships, and more!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
No matter how many times we are discouraged to accept this, I had to eventually learn that what you eat in your daily diet matters. Unlearning that your health issues are random things that have no source or correlation to your lifestyle was one of the hardest, yet impactful, transitions I had to make in life. I used to parade through life absolutely clueless to the effect the foods I was putting into my body had on me. In college, when my health declined from poor eating, poor sleep habits, poor lifestyle choices, etc. I finally realized that the food I was eating daily was not only making me sick, but it was all my body had to rely on for nutrients. Consequently, when you’re eating malnourished and dehydrated foods, that’s essentially what you become. Being chronically sick inspired me to reevaluate the meals I consumed, and question whether or not my body could heal with what they offered to me nutritionally. When I finally changed my diet and started using food as the nourishing factor it’s meant to be, my health did a 360 change. I was able to watch my own health transform right before my eyes from changing my diet and detoxing my body. Being ignorant to the role we play in our own health issues by eating poorly is very costly in the end. We should all do ourselves a favor and eat with intentions to replenish our hard-working bodies. This doesn’t mean we can’t cut ourselves some slack and eat for comfort here and there, but it most certainly means that we shouldn’t neglect the fact that food is how our bodies receive the nutrients it needs to not only survive, but keep us strong and moving.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
If you want to be successful in the holistic wellness industry, you must be equipped with the passion and will to do the right thing by your community. Representing holistic health with a weak will is contradicting and misleading to the people who trust you to lead them. Passion will take you further than anything in this industry. People want to know that you’re not just another random person preaching about things you can look up on the internet and debunk. I’m confident the passion that exudes from my content, work, services, etc. is what continuously expands my audience and reach. I’m willing to make sure that my customers and clients feel supported and heard in return, and this isn’t something you can fake, it’s only something you can feel. Whether or not you feel it from yourself, for others, will determine how far you succeed in any industry you’re committing yourself to show up in.
