We were lucky to catch up with Shemar Gyce recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shemar, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
In the beginning I learned how to shoot just by watching videographers who I looked up to. I would download their videos and re edit them to see if I can make it look like there’s. One big help was when i decided to intern at the university of Oklahoma which really expanded my knowledge into professional production and working with a huge team. Knowing what I know now, if i went back and wanted to speed up my learning process I would immediately get on YouTube and reach out to videographers and get passes to different events and begin shooting no matter how big or small. The skills that I feel are most essential is the ability to shoot a video while also thinking about how you plan on editing because it limits the amount of unnecessary footage that you are attempting to capture.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Shemar Gyce, I am a Sports videographer. Breaking through this industry was nothing short of hard and I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I had a very strong support system that helped me to learn everything I know. Beginning with my girlfriend who continued to support me while on long countless hours of shoots. She also supported me when I was done shooting and would have to come home and edit hours of footage to a short form video. Another major resource that helped me learn to do what I do was my brothers Jeremiah Drake, Tristan Smith, and Donovan Nwarie all of which are very successful sports videographers. Jeremiah was the first person to reach out to me and invited me to collab with him on CUTTDIFFERENTTV which allowed me to expand my horizon and attend a multitude of events. Between Donovan and Jeremiah, i would not be where I am without them. Donovan brought me along to my first major shoot when he presented me with the opportunity to go to Pittsburgh and shoot pictures and video for Damar Hamlin.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele was, grinding. Even when i felt like I wasn’t growing as a creator, I always knew what my end goal would be. There were many times and still are times where I am doing free shoots to expand. There will be many late nights and early mornings! There will be times when you are exhausted and you do not see a return. You have to believe that God got you and it will be worth it in the long run.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my social media presence by consistently posting content. One thing I would do is I would create a main video for whatever event I went to as well as create short form videos for daily content. The consistency of posting as well as tagging other creators, helped push my page through instagrams algorithm. If you are looking to build a following for your brand or business, post consistently and engage with your followers when they like or comment on your page.
