Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shelly Qualtieri. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shelly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
Yes, there was a defining moment that completely shifted the trajectory of my career.
For years, I worked in the not-for-profit sector, deeply committed to helping others, but I found myself under the leadership of someone who made the environment incredibly challenging. Over time, I became burnt out. I was exhausted, overwhelmed by negativity, and unsure of what to do next. I realized that not only was I no longer fulfilled at work, but the stress was also spilling over into every part of my life. I wasn’t showing up as the mom, wife, or friend I wanted to be, and my own self-care had completely disappeared. Despite giving so much, I didn’t feel appreciated, and the spark that had led me into the mental health field in the first place was fading.
The defining moment came after a vacation with my family. Stepping away from work gave me perspective—I realized that life was too short to stay in a role that drained me and left me disconnected from the people and values that mattered most. I knew it was time to make a change.
That moment gave me the courage to start my own private practice as a mental health therapist. It was a leap of faith, but one rooted in the desire to rediscover the joy, passion, and purpose that brought me into this field to begin with. Looking back, I’m grateful for the challenges I faced, because they pushed me to honor myself, prioritize balance, and create a professional path where I can thrive while helping others do the same.
The lesson I carry with me—and share with others—is this: burnout is not a badge of honor. If your work is costing you your health, your relationships, and your sense of self, it’s a signal that change is necessary. Sometimes the hardest environments teach us the clearest lessons about what we truly value and what we’re meant to do.
Shelly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
When people think of counselling, they often imagine talking endlessly about problems. At Shelly Qualtieri & Associates, we do listen—but our focus is on solutions, practical strategies, and bite-sized tools that help clients take action immediately.
My journey spans over two decades—from seven years in a maximum-security prison, to child and family services leadership in Australia, and frontline work in addictions and domestic violence. Along the way, I discovered a deep passion for supporting teens, helping them navigate challenges and build resilience. But my greatest passion has become suicide and self-harm prevention—helping individuals and families find hope and life-saving strategies in the midst of crisis.
Today, my team and I work with children, teens, adults, couples, and families, offering trauma-informed care, coaching, and therapy. What sets us apart is our solution-focused approach—clients leave with strategies, skills, and tools they can apply in everyday life, whether it’s managing stress, improving communication, or building confidence.
Our mission is simple: Real Tools. Real Change. Bite-Sized Strategies for Emotional Wellness & Resilience at Every Age.
We help people uncover the root of their emotional challenges and provide practical guidance that fosters:
• Emotional intelligence and resilience
• Clarity and self-awareness
• Healthier relationships
• Confidence and personal growth
Our vision is to normalize and celebrate mental health across all ages. We work with individuals, families, organizations, and youth, offering tools and education that break stigma, strengthen resilience, and build connected, empowered communities.
Starting this practice was a personal turning point. After years in high-pressure roles, I realized I wasn’t showing up fully for myself or my family. Launching my own practice allowed me to rediscover my passion for this work and create a space where clients of all ages can find real solutions, hope, and resilience.
At the heart of it, healing is possible, hope is real, and no one has to face life’s challenges alone.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
For me, communication, relationships, respect, and connection are the cornerstones of strong leadership. I believe that when a team feels supported, heard, and valued, they not only thrive individually but also provide the highest level of care and service to clients.
In our practice, we encourage team members to bring concerns forward without fear, and we make a point to celebrate both the good and the challenging days together. This creates a culture of openness and trust. I’ve learned that when people feel connected and appreciated, they are more engaged, motivated, and committed—not just to their work, but to each other.
Maintaining high morale isn’t about perks or recognition alone; it’s about creating an environment where the team knows they can share honestly, ask for help, and grow together. In my eyes, this sense of community among staff is also the foundation for delivering excellent, compassionate services to clients. When the team loves what they do and feels genuinely supported, that energy translates directly into the care and impact we provide.
My advice to other leaders is simple: prioritize relationships, foster open communication, and cultivate a culture of mutual respect and connection. A strong, connected team doesn’t just make the workplace better—it creates the foundation for meaningful, lasting work with those you serve.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely—I wouldn’t change a thing. I love my role and the opportunity to support families, teens, and individuals navigating mental health challenges. Being a safe space for someone to share their story is both an honor and a privilege.
Every day, I’m reminded of why I chose this work: witnessing growth, resilience, and transformation in the people I support is incredibly rewarding. While the field comes with its challenges, the connections, trust, and moments of breakthrough make it profoundly fulfilling.
For me, there’s nothing more meaningful than helping someone find hope, build strength, and navigate life’s toughest moments. If I could start over, I would choose this profession all over again—and continue doing the work I love.
