We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shelly Payette a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shelly, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
Design and Art are so often computer generated that it looses the human aspect, the imperfect lines and element that make it one of a kind. People connect better to hand written letters and hand generated art.
Shelly, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My father was a modernist architect I studied industrial design and believe simple is better. I started silk screening at Mass College of Art right before the Pandemic but my studio was shut down during the Pandemic. I was unable to use the large photographic equipment in the studio to create the screens for my silk screening. So I began to create my images using a very simple silkscreen method. I use a paper cutout as stencils. The stencils last for only a few pulls. The images are flat, bright and geometric on water color paper. They have a simple Modernist quality to them.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Expressing myself and sharing my visual thoughts with others.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth.
