Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shelly Belk. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shelly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the most unexpected problems I faced in business was how much of my own “stuff” would come up. Becoming a business owner was unknowingly to me one of the biggest portals to healing some deep-rooted stuff. Self-worth around naming and owning my price, decisions and my ability to trust myself, and deep fear of failure. There were so many times that I wondered if I was cut out for this but when I stopped looking at my limitations and saw things has opportunities to grow and heal, with the help from my coach of course, did I begin to shift these perceived problems. That is not to say I don’t feel these things now, I just know how to navigate them differently with new awareness.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was working as a Behavior Analyst for over a decade and after feeling massive burnout from working with insurance companies and realizing that this job was not cut out for working moms did I go on a journey to find other ways to utilize my skills. Long story short, I ended up becoming a Trauma-Informed Master Life Coach. I now work with high achievers in squashing their self-destructive habits, breaking through to their potential, learning to be present, and no longer get thrown around by their emotions and thoughts. What sets me apart is my understanding of human behavior and utilizing a holistic approach. I work with individuals who just didn’t feel like therapy got to the root of what they were experiencing, didn’t feel actionable for them, and didn’t feel like they were being pushed to their potential. incorporate a lot of science, mindset, nervous system regulation, breathwork, and so much more into my approach. I make things manageable so that you are changing without feeling like you’re changing which is the sustainable approach to behavior change. I am most proud of supporting people in their life-changing journey and back to themselves and in turn seeing them break generational patterns.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
A feeling I will never forget is when I massively raised my prices. The thing about life coaching is, it’s the wild west, and just like with any entrepreneur there really aren’t many rules. I was working with a coach and I knew I had a limiting mindset. My prices were so low that if you looked at it from the hour I was earning less than most minimum wage. She asked me my dream price, and I said a price that felt scary, she said, “Ok that is your new price”. I was both excited and SO nervous. This price was 10x what I was currently charging, which didn’t follow my rules of how you increase prices. To my horror, my next few sales calls were re-enrollments and a referral from my last client’s wife! I was terrified, these people already knew my prices. I kept thinking, “Who am I to raise my prices that much!?” I honestly didn’t know if I could follow through with it, but I did, despite wanting to throw up. Everyone agreed except one person. They said they thought it was crazy how little I was charging and they knew it was worth it to keep working with me. Of course, initially, I wanted to fixate on the one person who didn’t agree but when I look back I see my courage, I completely changed my relationship to money, and I rose. I rose as a coach, I became even greater because I now had to rise to be a coach that charged that much, and my clients rose too because they were truly investing and showing up differently when that much money was on the line.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me is word of mouth and referral partnerships. I thought I would exclusively be marketing on social media but that quickly showed me that that is the long game. When a client is coming from a trusted source they immediately already have more trust in me. It has been the best way to build my roster.
