Shelly and Glynnis , appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
We have been in the hair industry over 25 years and recently co-founded our Natural Hair Care line of products. I wish we had started the Hair care product business soon because 15 years ago, people were starting the natural movement and was eager to try new things. Now the market is very much over saturated so we have to find more creative ways to reach our customer base.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We are sisters who are south American descends who migrated from Guyana South America. We’ve call Kansas City our home for over 30 years.
We always had an interest in natural hair and was eager to create hair style that would be easy going yet fabulous and low maintenance. Braidheaven was created over 25 years ago serving hundreds of clients locally and nationally. We created the popular hair style called bubble braids. The sisters of Braidheaven are the only ones who know how to do this unique hairstyle.
In Oct 2018. We launched our natural hair care product called Meme Natural you! The product line consists of 7pieces of products that are uniquely infused with Rich Tucuma butter that derives from our home land in the Amazon rainforest. Our product was created to fill the void of moisture based hair care that works on contact.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
We are working with. Small manufacturing company that was able to bring our dream alive. We always wanted to produce or own product but it became very challenging to fund facility and manufacturing equipment. It was much more productive to come up with our ingredients and have a professional company put it together. It’s was a 2 year process of making sure that all the ingredients worked successfully and was hair friendly to all.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson we had to unlearn was thinking that we will be to reach customer through word of mouth the old way. We also had known our target audience and find creative ways to be engaging.
