Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shelli Bradley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shelli, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
I am a Los Angeles Stylist in Fashion and Interiors, but I’ve recently started a rental showroom where stylists and designers can come and rent items for commercials, promos shoots, tv/film and editorial. There are many showrooms in Los Angeles, but not many, if any, that are size inclusive. Most showrooms sizes range from size 0 to 4, 6 if you’re lucky. My showroom caters to many body types, size 0-3x. I think it’s important to ensure one can make as many people as you can to feel confident and beautiful.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born and raised in Gary, IN, but currently have resided in Los Angeles for the past 19 years. I got into my industry by doing a lot (and I mean a lot) of free gigs. It’s a great way to one, learn the industry and two, make great contacts along the way. I found jobs on Craigs List, through friends, etc. It’s a real hustle, but worth it.
I am a Fashion Stylist and Interior Decorator. I style clients for the red carpet, editorial, commercials and promo shoots. As far as Interiors, I decorate clients homes or businesses. My newest adventure is my rental showroom, which as I stated before, I rent clothing, shoes and accessories to Stylists and Costume Designers for commercials, red carpet, tv/film, etc.
Helping clients find their voice through clothing or interiors is most of my job. I think most people are afraid to play with different ideas thinking people will talk about them or that it may not look good on them without even trying it on. I’ll always bring a client what they want, but I’ll also always bring what they say they don’t like because most of the time when they put it on it’s the winner. They’ll say either “I would have never picked this” or “I’ve always wanted to try this but was too scared to.” My motto is at least try it because at least you’ll know.
I’m here to serve my clients and be patient with them as they go through this new journey. Getting out of your comfort zone isn’t easy in any aspect of your life, but it’s worth it and I’m here to push the boundaries for my clients. I allow them to be who they are, but with a twist.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I went through a divorce 12 years ago and it shattered my entire life. I lost everything (job, home, etc.) and had no idea where to go from there. I cried a lot, but had to figure out how to push through. I went from living in a four-story townhouse to living in someone’s back house with my son (when it was my days to have him). I was broken, but staying that way just wasn’t an option for me.
So in the midst of it all, I got up and worked by butt off with 2-3 jobs at a time, doing volunteer work in the industry to get my name out there and crying in between lol. But to say it was all worth it is an understatement. All the hard work did truly pay off and I began getting high paying gigs, moved into a large apartment for me and my son and the rest is history.
If I could say to my younger self it will be hard, but you’ll come out even better, the road obviously wouldn’t have seemed so hard. But it all made me this strong woman that I am today that I didn’t know existed. I wouldn’t change any of it. It’s a beautiful story of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. I truly have my wings now!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I work in tv/film as well as a Costumer. I’ve mostly worked on set, so I meet a lot of actors and they become like family. Many have loved the way I dressed and have inquired about my styling business. That has truly helped to build my clientele and from that comes referrals.
