We recently connected with Shelley Wenzel and have shared our conversation below.
Shelley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I believe there are many factors that come into play when describing what it takes to be successful. With that being said, I also believe that we all have our own definition of what success looks like. In my experience determination, discipline, and honesty are at the top of the list of qualities of a person I deem successful.
I have been in sales my entire career and anyone who has been in sales knows the highs are high and the lows are low. Having determination is important, in the regard that in spite of the many obstacles and difficulties you encounter you keep moving forward.
Discipline is also very important. There are days when motivation disappears but you must push yourself to do important tasks, that is when discipline takes over. In the end, I found the reward to be worth it.
Honesty is a quality I pride myself in and it goes hand in hand with client trust. Without honesty, their trust rightfully goes out the window. There’s sometimes a stigma that goes along with the term “salesperson”, that they are deceitful and underhanded, and unfortunately, there are people out there like that, but I’d like to think that there are more good ones than bad and that my colleagues are honest, thus trustworthy, and negotiate in good faith.
When I have earned my client’s trust, done a good job for them, negotiated with my colleagues in good faith, and had the determination and discipline to do the things necessary to keep my business moving forward, I am successful.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Good To Great by Jim Collins
I have always been a WHY & HOW person, meaning I want to know WHY something works the way it does, WHY a particular strategy works, and then HOW it was executed. The book Good To Great explains WHY certain companies that were good became great companies and HOW they achieved this. I highly recommend reading it a few times.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think a lot of factors helped me build my reputation in my market but the two I am most proud of are my honesty and the fact that if I say I am going to do something, I do it.
