We recently connected with Shelice Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Shelice, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you’re open to it, can you talk to us about the best (or worst) investment you’ve made. What’s the backstory and the relevant context behind why you made the investment
The worst investment I made as a business owner was investing in a Publicist. I’m not saying all publicist are scammers, but I definitely made a huge mistake trusting this person.
Back in December of 2021 the publicist popped up on my IG page. I read his bio and saw we were both from the same state. Of course I was like wow. So I digged a little deeper and saw he graduated from the same college as my oldest brother. So of course I’m like yea let me book a consultation and see how he can help my business get noticed. The first consultation was good (beware of fast talkers and when it seem to good to be true it probably is, get a second opinion). I let the person know I read up about him, but I didn’t do my part and research his business. I didn’t book services at that time m, but a few months later 2022 I decided it’s”Go Time”! I reached back out to this company and was ready to book services. Let’s just say a couple thousand dollars later this company have not done anything and I feel like I got scammed. I started to see some red flags after I paid but I had high hopes for this company and the things that were on their social media pages that they can do. Long story short don’t trust what you see on social media, do your research before investing your money, and interview more than one person in that field before making a decision. This was a minor set back but I’m glad it happened now to help me be more aware of scammers.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Within my market me being authentic and humble helped build my social media audience. As a birth worker there are so much to learn and unlearn in this field. I have learned that no two birth workers are the same regardless if they had the same training. I enjoy supporting others even if is just sharing a post to my stories or recommending someone to their services. By doing this I have noticed a increase in my followers and I’ve met so many great people. Social media can become overwhelming, but just stay true to yourself and flow how you want to not how everyone else is flowing. The main focus is getting the correct information out to your audience.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source for me is Word of Mouth and website with Google reviews. These two things has gotten me some really loyal clients (turned into family). Most times when someone book a consultation because someone referred them to me or they did their research and found me they are willing to pay and book services at that time.
