We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shelia Moore-piper. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shelia below.
Hi Shelia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I started writing songs when I was 8 years old. My friends were outside playing but, I would always be in the house writing songs or learning songs on the Piano. I have always liked music and even wanted to some day be a Recording Artist. I listened to a lot of artists growing up and I also listened to songs particularly ballads. I like different types of music not just one genre. However; it wasn’t till I went to one of my colleges that my professor asked me “what I was gonna do when I graduated” and I wasn’t sure! He told me you gotta eat so do something that can pay your bills and help you live. So; I went the educational route. Many years later after being in the education sector, I received a ” Huge” raise. I was so excited about the promotion that I thought I would be there forever until the God reminded me about the dreams he gave me to write and produce songs at the age of 8 years old. I didn’t get the message to leave my career path at first but, one day I was trying to find something and I went into my home office, opened the closet door and there were many songs lying around just waiting to be released. I had a epiphany!! I eventually left my career sector and went full-time into my calling of being an Artist and Songwriter! The call to Produce others eventually also manifested after I accepted my call as an Artist and Songwriter!

Shelia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the industry in 2008 but; it wasn’t until 2014, I went full-time into the Recording Industry as a Artist/Arranger and Producer after being in the education sector. My hubby and I started Bdm/Ugroove Music in 2004 and we had to revise a lot things. For instance, we had to learn to how to Brand. Everything in Branding is so crucial, from the spelling of a name, image etc. We are a independent label but, we act as producers. We are a compliment to others calling and we help artists take their musical talents and gifts to the next level! We also educate artists we work with too on understanding the music business and it’s called music business for a reason. A lot of people are talented but, uniqueness is required to not duplicate someone else. We have a unique sound and professionalism that sets us apart from others and I believe this is why God organically sends people to us because; we keep God first in all we do! It’s Important to have a spiritual foundation! I am most proud of the work we done over the years on the music I’ve released but, also songs we’ve written, or and co-written as well as produced for other artists. I was glad we took the risk to be a blessing to others in the industry. One of the artists we worked with, single stayed on the billboard charts for over 15 weeks! I’ve been blessed as a artist and songwriter to make it several times on Billboard but; never reached 15 weeks straight. However; whether I’m on the front cover of a CD or in the background as a producer; my name is still involved and this is huge to me! I learned’ Success is not a destination; It’s a journey”! Working hard, staying humble are true components and staying spiritual grounded is definitely key! It’s a blessing to create and put out quality music that will leave a lasting legacy!!

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes, I wish I had the resources earlier in my journey to know who’s legit or fake in this industry! Everybody is not who they say they are and I got taken advantaged of several times. Me and my hubby call these lessons ” Bought Lessons”. Some things I think you have to learn so you’ll know what to avoid but, bought lessons can be expensive! This is why it’s called ” Music Business”. So I say to anyone who wants to be in this industry, trust your gut, ask questions and by all means “do your research”. Don’t be afraid to learn and understand that what got you there won’t keep you there! Keep learning the biz!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The particular goal is evolving! I recently learned that what gets you there won’t keep you in your position as an artist, songwriter, producer, label executive etc. You have to keep learning and growing with the times! What worked in 2008, will not work in 2024. The music industry has changed drastically since then and if you gonna stay in this business, you gotta keep up with what’s going on now or you’ll be outdated on how you do things. For example: Media-base is the new billboard Learn how Media-base does things! Learn the business of Music! It’s essential that you learn!
