Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sheleah Monéa. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sheleah , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The story of how I came about singing is a simple one. My mother explains it like this: “Sheleah was singing before she could talk and form sentences.” My father who is also a singer, use to create music and perform often and I naturally gravitated toward music.
I’ve never wanted to do anything else. I tell people I am only good at one thing: Music!
The earliest documented ‘made up’ song was at age 6. I learned how to record by age 7 and knew this was what I wanted to do with my life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
“When you have an audience, put on a show”
I am a singer and songwriter who started off my life in Boston, MA. I’ve participated in countless talent shows, theater groups & vocal training, I also worked on writing about my life & feelings and turning them into melodies became a huge part of my identity as an artist.
Eventually I would attend Berklee College of Music for a time before making the permanent move to Houston, TX.
Being on stage is one of my favorite places to be. I’ve dedicated my entire life to my craft. Writing for myself as well as having writing credits on other projects. Regularly performing with Variety Bands through out Texas and beyond. I also participate in many Singer Showcases where I can bring my music to life.
Being an artist means you will experience many ups and downs. Uncertain moments, ageism, vanity, body shaming, critics who will often voice concern over career choices that may seem impossible to achieve. It is essentially hitting the lottery.
Giving up or taking pauses through out the years has slowed me down at times, but I can’t give up what I feel I was born to do.
Working out and setting that time aside has instilled a level of discipline and focus for the goals I want to achieve in life. Having a Big goal and breaking it into smaller goals helps with motivation. It’s not always there, but that’s where discipline and focus comes into play.
I have been working on some projects and plan on putting out more original material in 2024 as well as performing around the Houston area and beyond.
I would also love to invite people into my world via my social media platforms, in particular sharing stories and vlogs documenting everything it takes to be in this business in this day in age.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I am actively trying to unlearn is believing in myself & sharing my career unapologetically.
Sometimes we fear others opinions of us or we’re constantly comparing ourselves to others online or IRL. At the end of the day, we are all trying to live our lives to the fulest while trying to find balance and harmony. Sometimes tuning out the noise is necessary to focus on your and remember your why in the first place.
We can’t compare ourselves to others when we don’t know the road that they had to take to get to where they are. Focus on you and you only and keep growing and being the best you can possibly be. Most people will gravitate towards that.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My favorite compliment that I have received is not that my voice is beautiful (I do love that compliment though 🤗) but that you can feel the emotions I provide while singing a story. Music is a universal language that unites so many by similar shared stories. I try my best to emote the stories the best way I can so that the listener walks away feeling the way they wanted to feel while engaging with the record/and or live performance.
