We were lucky to catch up with Sheldon Thomas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sheldon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Growing up I always had a love for music and theater. My mother is a wonderful singer and actress and my father is as well. They also both teach it professionally. I grew up around the arts my whole life. Initially I was going to pursue a career in medicine and in biology. I was getting ready to dive fully into the medical field after college. Once college ended and the pandemic hit I decided to take the leap and pursue music and acting seriously and I preceded to write my first song in December of 2021 entitled “Therapy”. Once I took the steps to actively focus on my passions, everything else fell into place.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Sheldon Thomas. My stage name is spelled “shelldhn” same pronunciation. I am a singer, songwriter, producer and actor. I was born and raised in Nashville Tennessee. I am a lover of all things creative. I first got into this industry fairly recently. When I first started I was looking for some help with production to help elevate my music, I sent DM’s and emails to many local musicians and producers but to no avail I couldn’t find anyone who would respond. I began to take matters in my own hands and learn to produce music myself. I also got a response back from a producer by the name of Reese who was in Chattanooga at the time. Our working relationship grew into a brotherhood and he’s now a great friend and extended family member. I am celebrating 1 year of me embarking professionally as a singer and 2 years as a professional actor. I began writing songs 2 years ago and I fell in love with the creative process. I have also had the opportunity to perform on regional stages here, thanks to Nashville Rep Theater.
In the past year I have put out 2 EP’s. The first being entitled “Therapy” that project came out in early August I fully funded my debut solo show and it sold out. I am very proud of myself for that achievement. 5 months later I decided to release a follow up EP entitled “1-800-4DA-LVRS” and it was a wonderful experience and sonically more evolved. I will be releasing a part 2 of that project in early-mid August.
As I continue to evolve and grow I am finding more about myself and my sound, especially when it comes to music. I’m terms of acting I hope to continue to work and improve on making each character as realized as possible.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative to me is, the fact that we are able to create something out of nothing. In my opinion it’s the closest to God that we can possibly get. I feel my most spiritually connected when I’m creating, whether that be writing, singing or acting. I can explore new sides of myself and learn new ways of expressing and understanding the complexities of what makes up my inner self. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to have the freedom to express any and every aspect of your life in a way that brings you joy and happiness and satisfaction. Being able to create and have the ability to create is something that I don’t take lightly, and I truly am honored each day that I have been given an opportunity to express myself in ways that make me feel whole.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I do have a specific goal that is driving me in my creative journey. One of the goals that I want to accomplish is becoming an EGOT. For those who do not know what that means it’s an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and tony. My life’s goal is to achieve success in all of those fields through Cinema, television, theater, and music. but really, the main goal overall is to just have a successful living wage off of making art, especially in this climate, and in this time today we are so over saturated with material that my goal is to make sure that I maintain my authenticity and stay true to myself, and know that I don’t have to sound or be like anyone else to achieve success in the main stream. Because ultimately, if you try to pretend to be who, you’re not, you’ll never truly get to experience who you can be because we’re so busy trying to put on a mask. So in this. So in this creative process I want to make sure that I am maintaining a true sense of self at all times, and not get lost in the glitz and glam, and all the hype that comes with being a creative. . I work hard to make sure that what I put out whether that be music or any other creative form of myself, I want to make sure that it is authentic, and that it is from a genuine place. We owe it to our self to give our best. We are all given the same amount of time in each day. We just have to make sure that we utilize it and I want to make sure that I am giving my best foot forward and trying all the things that I may be scared of doing. And even if I am scared, I’m still going to do it because I don’t wanna have any regrets looking back in my life saying what if I would rather say “why not?”.
