We recently connected with Shelby McKee and have shared our conversation below.

Shelby , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?

I was getting ready to go to a Cincinnati Bengals football game on a brisk fall Sunday. Wanting to wear ballet flats and with the temperature falling, I realized I wanted the warmth and comfort of a sock with the look of a no-show and traditional footies always fell off my feet, scrunched up in my shoes and never provided warmth. Armed with scissors and an idea, I cut a hole in a pair of knee high dress socks, slipped on my jeans and flats and off I went! I got to the game and realized…WOW, I think I have something here! My friend Campbell said, “Shelby, what are you wearing?” I flipped up my jeans and showed her my sock with a hole cut out of the top. My last name is McKee and Campbell said “OMG, that’s not a MacGyver sock, that is a McKeever sock!” We took McKeever and opted for Keysocks…every Key has a hole! Committed to seeing my dream become a reality for other women who have suffered long enough for fashion footwear, I created KEYSOCKS, the only knee high no-show socks that stay in place and out of sight!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

You know, that phenomenon when your shoes “eat” your socks? Keysocks are the answer! At last, the solution for all women; better than simple footies when you want the comfort of a sock but the look of a no-show.

We have been featured on Good Morning America, Today and are partnered with The Shark Group/Daymond John Portfolio of products.

We are most proud that we have never given up when faced with many adversities. We are going on ten years since we launched Keysocks and the road to success has not been a smooth path! In the beginning stages, the challenge was finding a manufacturer because a knee high no-show sock had not ever been created. Keysocks are all hand cut and we started with 1 size/1 style and .we now have approximately 20 SKUS!

How’d you meet your business partner?

Luckily for me, my sister Christy Parry is my business partner and we work so well together! Christy and I work side by side, day in and day out! Without Christy’s expertise and entrepreneurial spirit, Keysocks would not be where it is today. Our goal with Keysocks is to finally offer comfort and fashion and to make women feel empowered everyday! All of our socks have inspirational sayings on the bottom of each pair. I believe that we are what we think and the power of positivity is so important. The “feel good” moments in life are my favorite and I want to share those with women and girls all over the world. Love is the KEY and Christy and I are not stopping until we get one or at least 5 pairs of Keysocks in every woman’s sock drawer!

Any advice for managing a team?

My advice to entrepreneurs who would like to start their own business is make sure there is a need in the marketplace first and foremost. If you find a solution to a problem and believe that it can be taken to market then GO FOR IT! Do your research and utilize your strengths in the right places. That means, putting a team of people together that you trust and work well together.
