We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shelby Lutz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shelby thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I don’t think I would change anything about the timeline of my business taking off. It was all in God’s hands from the beginning. In 2022, I was working as a 6th grade ELA/Science teacher in a district close by, and truly did not feel fulfilled with my position. I knew I needed to make a change and I knew God had a plan. I always wanted to mix my dreams of being a stay at home mom, teaching and rodeoing with my husband, it was just such a hard dream to combine in all aspects.
Shelby, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Shelby, my husband Aj and I have made our home in Cave Creek, Arizona with our roping horses, three dogs, 2 year old son Riggin and twin boys Rhett and Radley. We have a deep rodeo background: I was a second-generation rodeo queen and former Miss Rodeo Oregon. AJ is a retired bullfighter for the PRCA but still remains a competitive team roper on the Turquoise Circuit. When we aren’t roping and riding, AJ runs a successful hauling company with routes throughout the west, and I love to teach. I have a degree in Human Development and Family Science from Oregon State University and a Masters Degree from George Fox University. I have taken my love for teaching to 2 continents and 4 states. I have taught all ages from Kinder to 7th grade in a span of 8 years. I truly enjoy the fun of learning!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Professional Rodeo has brought the best like minded people together. Our collective love for Jesus, rodeo, small businesses and the western way of life has created a great environment for growth.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
2022 was one of the toughest years of my life. I had just given birth to our first son, lost respect for the school I was working for and lost my mother to cancer. My bank account was empty that summer but my heart was full for God and his plans for me. I resigned my current teaching position and new with my mother leaving us too early that she would want me to do something that truly fulfilled me. And just like that 4L Learning was born, and I have never been more successful and fulfilled in my life.
