We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shelby Frederick. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shelby below.
Shelby, appreciate you joining us today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
My first job in the field of massage therapy was at a local upscale day spa in the heart of downtown Columbus, Ohio. It was like stepping into the pages of a luxury magazine, each detail meticulously designed, from the cucumber-infused water to the heated towels. The spa, nestled in the Arena District, where famous athletes and artists frequently visited, exuded an atmosphere of excitement and exclusivity. The thrill of not knowing who might end up on your table added a touch of intrigue to the experience.
At the time, my goal was crystal clear: I wanted to immerse myself in an environment that reflected the level of service and healing experience I aspired to create for my clients one day. I envisioned building a “healing oasis” where holistic healing could occur for the mind, body, soul, and spirit. Working in this luxurious spa was not just a job, but a stepping stone towards my dream. It allowed me to refine my skills, learn the intricacies of delivering a top-notch experience, and understand the level of service I wanted to replicate in my future business.
Looking back, the recruiting process was not just straightforward, but also serendipitous. The spa owner, a member of my church, played a pivotal role in my journey. Her offer to join her team as a contractor was an honor, and it opened the door to invaluable hands-on experience. More than that, it gave me a unique opportunity to observe and learn the behind-the-scenes workings of a successful business. This experience was formative, shaping my vision and understanding of what it takes to run a thriving wellness practice.
Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for that first job. It was more than just a stepping stone in my career. It was an experience that not only provided me with professional growth but also affirmed my desire to create a space where true healing could begin for every client who walks through the door.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who may not be familiar with my work, my journey into the health and wellness industry began in 2006, during a pivotal moment in my life. I was working in human resources at that time, but when my payroll coordinator position was unexpectedly eliminated, it pushed me to re-evaluate my path. Around that same time, I had been introduced to the wellness field, and something about it sparked a deep interest in me. Rather than seeing the job loss as a setback, I embraced it as an opportunity to step into something new, a testament to the resilience that I bring to my work.
My journey in the health and wellness industry began with a leap of faith. Following the unexpected job loss in 2006, I enrolled in massage therapy school, marking the start of a 17-year evolution. Beyond massage therapy, I’ve delved into mental and emotional health, personal development, and coaching. Today, I’m proud to offer a diverse range of services that cater to the whole person—mind, body, soul, and spirit.
Some of the critical services and products I offer include:
Holistic Mental Health Coaching: I work with women to help them navigate and overcome trauma, stress, and anxiety, focusing on creating lasting mental and emotional wellness.
Wellness Programs and Group Coaching: Programs like the Healing Circles and the Rest and Reset Coaching Program provide safe, no-judgment spaces for participants to heal and grow.
Faith-Based Resources and Training: I also offer courses, webinars, and resources that blend faith with practical wellness strategies, such as the God’s Remedy for Anxiety webinar series and the GROWth Blueprint coaching model.
Books and Educational Materials: I’ve authored and co-authored numerous books, journals, and notebooks, each designed to help people live more peaceful, purpose-filled lives. A few highlights include God’s Remedy for Anxiety and Think Like a Champion.
The main problem I solve for my clients is helping them achieve inner healing, whether that’s recovering from trauma, managing stress, or developing resilience. I also guide women through practical strategies to maintain mental and emotional wellness in their everyday lives. My holistic approach sets me apart: I deeply believe that true healing touches every part of a person—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually—and I bring this integrated perspective into every aspect of my work, ensuring that my clients feel understood and cared for.
What I’m most proud of is my work’s impact on people’s lives. I’ve seen clients experience profound breakthroughs, not just in their mental health but in their overall sense of purpose and well-being. Helping people heal one session at a time is not just a business for me—it’s a calling and what drives me every day.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and my brand, it’s that I’m deeply committed to providing a space where fundamental, lasting transformation can happen. Whether through my books, wellness programs, or speaking engagements, my goal is to help people embrace healing and live in alignment with their God-given purpose. This commitment is the cornerstone of my work, providing a secure and hopeful environment for my clients.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Several factors have helped me build my reputation within the health and wellness market. First and foremost, authenticity has been vital. From the beginning, I’ve been transparent about my own journey, sharing both my challenges and triumphs. I think people resonate with that level of openness because it creates a genuine connection, and they feel seen and understood. Authenticity goes a long way in the wellness industry, where trust is essential.
Another factor that has significantly contributed to my reputation is my transformative, holistic approach to healing. I don’t just focus on one aspect of a person’s well-being; I address the mind, body, soul, and spirit. This integrative perspective sets me apart because it helps people experience profound and comprehensive healing, inspiring hope and a sense of possibility. They appreciate that I don’t put a band-aid on issues—I help them dig deeper to find true healing and transformation.
The quality of service has also strengthened the reputation I provide. I intentionally create a nurturing, non-judgmental environment where clients feel safe expressing their struggles and vulnerabilities. This environment is a testament to my commitment to their well-being, and it has built a strong foundation of trust. Whether it’s through my one-on-one coaching sessions, group programs like Healing Circles, or faith-based wellness training, I always aim to give my clients the best experience possible. This level of care has built a strong foundation of trust, and word-of-mouth referrals have been influential in growing my client base.
Additionally, my consistency in showing up for my clients and community has dramatically impacted my reputation. Whether through my podcast, newsletters, books, or social media presence, I consistently deliver value and encouragement to my audience. That ongoing support has cultivated loyalty and built a community around my work.
Lastly, collaboration and community engagement have also been crucial. I’ve worked closely with churches, businesses, and other wellness professionals to bring mental and emotional health to a broader audience. These collaborations have allowed me to expand my reach and create a reputation as someone who is genuinely invested in the well-being of others.
Altogether, I think my authenticity, holistic approach, high-quality service, consistency, and collaborative mindset have all contributed to building a solid and respected reputation in my market.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Other than training and knowledge, the most critical factors in my success are my faith in Jesus and the unwavering support of my family. My faith has been the foundation of everything I do, guiding me through every decision, challenge, and success. In an industry like health and wellness, where you are constantly pouring into others, it’s essential to have a solid spiritual grounding. My relationship with Jesus gives me the strength, clarity, and wisdom to not only navigate the ups and downs but also to serve my clients with love and compassion. I lean on Him for guidance in my work, and that faith has been instrumental in helping me keep my purpose at the forefront of everything I do, ensuring that my decisions are always aligned with my values and principles.
The support of my family has been just as crucial. They’ve been my backbone through every season of growth and change, providing me with the warmth and care that I needed. Whether it was encouraging me to pursue my passion when I first started in the field or standing by me during times of uncertainty, their belief in me has been a constant source of motivation. In this field, where emotional and mental resilience is necessary, having that kind of support system has made all the difference. It allows me to show up for my clients and community, knowing I have a solid foundation of love and encouragement behind me.
Faith and family have been the cornerstones of my journey, giving me the emotional and spiritual strength to keep pushing forward, no matter the challenges I face. My faith, in particular, has provided me with a deep sense of resilience, allowing me to overcome even the most daunting obstacles.
