We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shelby Eloria a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Shelby thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?

Our core focus is to guide people to own their presence.

I started this business because I saw, and experienced, the power that clothing has – both when we wear something we love and when we wear something that does not feel like us. We wear clothes every day and yet so many of us are not given guidance on choosing pieces that express who we are. The moment someone makes the connection on why they love something and I see them stand a little taller is why I do this. It’s aligning who you are on the inside with how you express yourself through what you wear. It starts with knowing yourself. I had a client once tell me ‘I have all new clothes and yet have never felt more like myself’.

Shelby, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

How did you get into it?

I have a background in HR. Spent 13 years working in corporate HR. I always knew I wanted to do something different and start a business but didn’t know what it was. I ended up being laid off from my HR job and was given an opportunity to try something new. I never thought I would do anything in the fashion world because I had a stigma – fashion is vanity. Over and over during my career people would ask me to go shopping with them or help them figure out their style and it would get noticed. I recognized that what we wear is a communication tool and yet we’re not taught how to use what we wear as a communication tool. This propelled me to start All Set Style. I wanted to teach people to use clothing as a tool to express who they are and communicate what they want to say.

Products you offer

There is a misconception that style is for “going out” but it’s for all parts of your life – it’s about everything you wear and how that makes you feel from the sweatshirt you wear for lounging, to your workout gear, to going work.

I offer both personal and corporate services.
Style foundations program: Colours that work for you, cuts that work for your silhouette, style personality – digging out who they are and then connecting that with how they can express that through clothing and style, and finally making sure it works with your lifestyle.
Wardrobe edits – getting into what you already own and deciding what works for you and what is ready to make an exit.
Shopping – making it easy to try things on and discover your style.

Problem you solve

People come to me because they are frustrated and feeling like their clothes aren’t reflecting who they are and sometimes as simple as they don’t like shopping. This is solved by giving them the knowledge and tools to align who they are internally with what they wear and how to use it effectively as a communication tool. When done well you feel confident, you feel like yourself, you’re communicating to yourself and creating a self image (you’re worth it, you know what you’re doing)

Visual first impressions happen in less than a second – making an impression with people that actually says who you are.
You can use your style and clothing to tell yourself and others your values, vision, how you see yourself, what you want.

What sets you apart?

My ability to see people, to ask the right questions to draw out who they are and what they want, ability to connect who they are with what they wear. I make people feel at ease and put people in a learning mindset where it’s okay to make mistakes and experiment. It’s about mindset as much as clothing (maybe more)

What I am proud of?

I’m most proud of seeing people’s lives change after working with me and an increased confidence to go after what they want. An increased confidence to choose what they wear by removing a barrier in their life. Shopping decisions are made much more easily. I have heard this through great testimonials from clients.

Things you want people to know?

It’s important to think of an investment in personal styling services as an investment in personal and professional development. You learn things that will last you a lifetime, you boost your confidence (even in areas that have nothing to do with clothing), you can achieve goals.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

One of the best examples of resilience in my career is after being laid off from my HR career I was able to view it as an opportunity. I had thought about starting my own business for years, however did not know what it would be. I just knew there was something inside me that was ready for something different and now I was given the golden ticket to get started.

I chose an industry and business that is not essential and therefore is difficult to build and grow, however I have remained resilient even through a pandemic because of my passion for what I am doing and the impact it has on people. I have seen how it changes lives and that is why I do what I do.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

One of the most shocking things for me was in the first few years of starting my business, most of my clients came through online searches. Still to this day that is the number one source of clients. Even though the amazing people I work with refer me all the time, they do not always come to me.

This was very curious to me and as I thought about it I realized it’s because there needs to be a certain level of discouragement with your clothing/style before you get to the place of being ready to invest in a personal stylist.

I have continued to build my clientele through networking, online communication, speaking opportunities, and ultimately creating an experience that leaves people more confident then when we first started working together.
