We were lucky to catch up with Shelby Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shelby , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
We hope to one day be able to look back and say that we genuinely affected change in the cannabis space. We want to be able to say, without a doubt, that Bloomlite made a positive impact on the lives of individuals, and social consciousnesses at large. When we have completely fulfilled our capacity to share and destigmatize the cannabis plant and it’s potential, we will have achieved our mission. Bloomlite will be known for the passion that goes into each and every batch of product that we produce.
Shelby , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Bloomlite was founded out of a passion for and indebtedness to cannabis. Nick Bowden, our co-founder, has been relying on cannabis since age 16, when he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. I, myself have used cannabis for my generalized anxiety disorder as well as my endometriosis symptoms for years. We both knew this plant was something special. In 2020, Nick became very ill from his Crohn’s medication, and was eventually diagnosed with drug-induced lupus. With a pending disability application at the Social Security Administration, and after failing numerous intense lupus medications, Nick finally found that high dose hemp extract was the only thing that worked for his symptoms. Our lives changed over night. I had my partner back, and Nick had his life back. We immediately dove head first and knee deep into the world of hemp. We now grow our own hemp, manufacture our own products, design our own product labels, and fulfill every single order ourselves. We’re small, but we do it all! We specialize in small batch, palatable, craft cannabis oils with a high concentration of cannabinoids. As cannabis consumers ourselves, we also focus on providing products at an affordable price!! We send each batch of product to a third party, DEA registered laboratory for potency and compliance testing. We’re proud of our products!
How’d you meet your business partner?
Nick and I went to high school together, though I’m not sure he even knew I existed back then! After college, we both moved back to our hometown of Goldsboro, North Carolina where we reconnected and fell in love. We both come from Air Force families and share the same values, which we apply to our business. 6 years later, Nick and I are still best friends and we feel extremely blessed to be able to pursue this endeavor together as a couple.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
We manufacture our products in our laboratory. It all started when we found that large doses of CBD worked for Nick’s lupus symptoms. We could not find a product on the market that was efficacious, palatable, and affordable. After trying to work with several companies to create the right product, it became obvious that we would have to do this ourselves. We spent months on research and development; working on formulations and trying to perfect efficacy, palatability, and delivery method. We eventually began making gummies, oils, capsules, and topicals for ourselves and some close relatives before we finally launched our first Bloomlite products. Along the way, we learned a lot of lessons about cannabis, good manufacturing practices, and industry in general. The most important lesson that we learned, however, is that if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself!
