We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shelby Beckman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shelby below.
Shelby, appreciate you joining us today. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
I opened a boutique fitness studio based off of a concept I found when I lived in LA… and I didn’t make it to 3 years. It was a hard pill to swallow and very humbling. I had never taken a leap of faith like I did when I decided to open a business and I have never failed so royally. Since closing my business October 2021 I’ve had ample time to reflect on every aspect of the business and have taken away a multitude of valuable business lessons. Failure has always frightened me because we are taught that anything less than perfect is not ok. I now disagree with that statement and fully believe that the more you fail, the more you will succeed in the future. Failure is about learning, and most times you learn more from WHAT NOT TO DO, than from WHAT TO DO. I say fail, fail, fail and then you can sail, sail, sail. It’s always hard to fail but I am learning to embrace the failure and learn and grow.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an entrepreneur to my core and although I no longer have a brick and mortar business I feel like I have the opportunity to really figure out the next great business venture. I am currently a realtor, both residential and commercial as well as COO of Bonnette Elite Physical Therapy and Wellness. I find that I love solving other people’s business questions and problems and seem to offer better advice for others than I am able to apply myself. Those who cannot do, teach and right now I feel like that is me, which is ok because that only means I am learning and growing.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Being an honest and genuine person and not pushy. It’s not what you will read about in sales courses, but I find it easier for me to be true to who I am and not force anything. Any time I have deviated from my north star, I end up regretting it and realizing it was not the push for me. Word of mouth is the best kind of marketing and the most sustainable.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There are so many amazing books that help you get through wherever you are in your leadership and I feel that when you need guidance and advise the correct book ends up finding its way to you. I’m sure everyone states that Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” would be my first read for anyone. The concepts in the book seem like common sense, but as time passes by, common sense is no longer common.
