We were lucky to catch up with Shelah Salazar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shelah, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I love being a business owner. I got to create my dream work environment. I wanted The Style Studio to be the opposite of my experience working in a corporate salon setting. I try to never make my staff feel like I’m their “Boss”, we are a team and I do my best to be a good leader and mentor for them. I also wanted a environment that feels relaxing and welcoming for our customers, not a rushed environment like I had when I was working in a chain salon.
I may work 24/7 now but to answer your questions, I definitely do not think of working a “regular” job ever again.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! I’m Shelah, I’ve been a Stylist for 11 years now, I absolutely love and enjoy what I do. I specialize in color and haircuts. I love that my clients trust and give me the freedom to make their hair goals come alive. I’m also the Owner of The Style Studio, it is a full service Beauty Salon. I am extremely grateful to have this opportunity to be a salon owner, it wouldn’t be possible without my amazing clients that have followed and referred me and The Style Studio. That’s why I’m big on great customer service and quality work. Always take care of those who take care of you, so our clients definitely deserve the best.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
My father passed away in 2015. He had just retired when he got diagnosed with stage 4 spindle cell carcinoma (cancer), they gave him a 2 month survival rate and that’s all he lasted. Him and my mom always wanted to open a business together when he retired, sadly it never happened. When my father passed he left me a small life insurance. I decided to save some of that money and eventually open up a salon. So in 2020 I opened The Style Studio. For me it’s not just a “business” it’s my dads dream he never got to start. That’s why I put my all into growing The Style Studio.
