Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shel Levy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I strongly believe that it takes consistency to be successful! The more you practice your craft the better you get at it and you’ll be able to showcase that via social media or other outlets. One of my favorite personal stories to share, is when I had to stop doing shoots during covid-19; at the time I didn’t know how I would survive and I also started to lose contacts at certain outlets due to them losing their jobs. So to combat the adversity faced I started to get creative and took photographs of myself as well as videos and learned different editing styles. The more I posted the more I got recognition, which lead to multiple clients asking me to edit photos and videos. Thus creating a work from home job for myself. Keeping a strong mind and staying consistent are the keys to success!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For those who don’t know what I do, I’m a photographer, videographer, and editor. I mainly specialize in videography and editing, I shoot and edit music videos, YouTube videos, event recaps. I help clients capture the best moments. I also take time out to listen to what the clients want and then give creative direction. My most proud moment is when I got to meet on of my favorite artist Cordae and shoot his concerts, it was definitely a unbelievable moment for me and my career. Most recently I did a shoot for upcoming artist by the name of Kayla B and Doe Boy, being in the studio that night was a crazy experience for lack of a better term. The energy in the room you could feel that the song would be a hit. When creating in environments like that it makes the content so much better because the viewers can feel the same energy. I take pride in work every time I turn on my camera, so for those who book with me will get exactly what they want and more!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect would be the clients reaction to the video or pictures taken, also reading the comments when they post and seeing other people think my work is great.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I would say most non-creatives don’t understand when I run into creative blocks. Somedays I don’t have the motivation to be creative or I can’t come up with a concept for a client like I normally do. Non- creative would say things like “It can’t be that hard to come up with something” etc. So as a creative I would ask a non- creative to be nonjudgmental to a creative when they hit a creative block and might not get anything done for a couple hours.
