We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shekirah Mckenzie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shekirah below.
Shekirah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Sitting in my apartment in Cupertino, California, I was staring at my low stock of shea butter. If you’ve been to Cupertino, you know that there aren’t many stores that cater to African Americans. There I was stuck with finding someone in Atlanta to either ship some to me or create my own, so I won’t be in this situation again because who doesn’t love a nice smooth, hydrated skin?
From this, Brooklyn Shea was born. The name Brooklyn Shea derives from my love of shea butter and the place I am from, Brooklyn, New York. I wanted a name representing my love for where I am from and, of course, shea butter.
My love for shea butter is unmatched. When mixed with the right ingredients, shea butter works wonders for your skin. I wanted to share my love for shea butter with everyone, whether it’s your first time trying it or not.
Shekirah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m in the tech industry by day and skincare industry by night!
I always wear shea butter and when mixed with the right ingredients, shea butter works wonders for your skin. I wanted to share my love for shea butter with everyone so that everyone can experience the natural products and what it can do for your skin.
Not only do I use shea butter as the main ingredient in my body butters, it’s also the main ingredient in my soaps and body scrub. Along side those products I make beard oil and body oil. My products has helped people with dry skin and dry beards.
I think what sets me apart from others is my transparency. I list all my ingredients on my labels, I do not use artificial coloring and my products are 100% natural. For an example, my Aloe body butters, I use a real aloe plant and remove the aloe gel myself.
I’m most proud of myself and how far I’ve came. This idea was literally a thought while stuck in my apartment during the height of covid and seeing it come true is a blessing. I would like my current clients to know, that I’m grateful for all the support and continued support. To my potential clients, I hope you all would give my products a chance. You will not be disappointed, there is something for everyone!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that you can make everyone happy. With great customer service, you are making sure your customer are satisfied with your products and/or service however, you also have to realize not everyone will like your products or services. Which is completely fine. Cater to your crowd and just do the best you can and stay transparent.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media to me is always a work in process. My audience is decent on social media however I know I can grow it larger. You really need to either stay very active on your social media platforms or hire a social media specialist.
Starting out, my advice is to set aside time at least twice a week to full focus on posting, content creation and just networking.
