We recently connected with Shekinah Monee and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shekinah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
When I think about how I started my business, it was out of necessity. I was wondering for someone, and unexpectedly had to start working for myself. I do wish sometimes that I started a little later, so I had things lined up better. I had to learn a lot of things in real time. It was truly on the job training. It is one thing to be a Junior Brand Strategist. It is another thing to then have to push yourself into business owner. Having to jump into this role it pushed me outside of my comfort zone and made this introvert appear to be an extrovert. I guess looking back had I not been pushed, I would not have become the “force” that I am today.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a Brand Strategist, Lifestyle Blogger, and Influencer. As an international MBA recipient, I am also a former Executive Director of two preliminaries for Miss America and was most recently served on the Miss NY Board of the Directors and the Booking Director for Miss New York’s Outstanding Teen. I have a vast amount of knowledge in what is required for a Beauty Queen to build a brand. I got into public relations while working with the Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Organization. I started off as their Media Trainer.
While I love working behind the scenes, I started off as a Beauty Queen competing in Miss NY USA, Miss GA USA, and America’s Perfect pageants. I held the titles of Miss Metro Atlanta USA, NYC’s Perfect Miss, NY’s Perfect Woman, World’s Perfect Woman Supermodel, and was last Brooklyn’s Perfect Woman. Currently, I am signed to MMG and EFM Model Management.
Currently, I am guest speaking at colleges, pageants, and workshops sharing my journey to building my own brand. I have taught Perfectly You at America’s Elite Miss pageant, Crown Con and Albright College, and will continue to share how to be perfectly you throughout the country.
Currently, I am offering media training, brand management, talent recruitment, social media marketing, event management, product placement, and casting services. My goal is to help you with your vision, to elevate your vision, and focus your vision. I love to be a part of the journey that helps you get to the next level.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When it comes to my social media presence, I’ve learned that my personal social media is just as important as my professional presence. I have paid attention to what the audience likes, what clients have reached out to me, and the different DMs that I have received. Over time, it has been a game with the algorithm, but I feel like I finally have a handle on it. I actually had my personal account hacked, and I was locked out for a year. With campaigns that I was working on, I had to rebuild. It was hard to start over from almost 20,000 followers, but I got it done. The lockdown and being more interactive proved to be a benefit.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I’ve honestly built my clientele from work of mouth and social media. Every person that I have met with has not become a client, and I have been very honest. I also do trials so that we can see if we gel well together and understand each other’s roles. Also, I want to make sure that I live up to my end of the deal. I appreciate that the jobs and campaigns that I have worked on have proven to be enough to spread the word.
