We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shekina Moses a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Shekina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?

I absolutely love capturing images whether it’s of myself or others on my phone. My husband, who was my boyfriend at the time purchased me a Nikon camera in 2015. He recognized my love for taking pictures, and he was also tired of me taking images on his phone. Hilarious right! I would capture almost everything we did together to include family functions, dates and vacations. I also had a habit of using my mother’s camera for special occasions. I married my husband in 2019 and my interest in photography continue to grow and I desired my own professional camera. Christmas 2020 my husband surprised me with my own professional camera, since then I have not stop capturing memories.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Shekina Moses, I have a passion for capturing and creating memories that I can look back on. I’m from the small town of Leesburg, Ga. I was raised very family oriented and would be the designated family photographer at all times. my mom was a significant influencer in my passion for photography as well as others I have crossed paths with in the photography industry. Growing up I would watch my mom work in her passion while helping her on many occasions. She would take time to capture the very things she loved to do, such as her decor for weddings and events. She would even bring her camera on every vacation to capture every moment to include everything we did growing up. Looking back, I realized that I wanted to become an entrepreneur just as she was for many years. After the purchase of my very first professional camera Nova Bright Photography LLC was birth in March in 2020. Nova meaning a star showing a sudden large increase in brightness…. Nova Bright began servicing South Georgia and abroad providing customized sessions ranging from newborn, maternity, senior portraits, professional headshots, branding, family, and wedding photography. I pride myself in continuously perfecting my craft by learning different techniques to better service my clients. I believe it is extremely important to invest and gleam knowledge from those who footsteps you follow or come across. I have a desire to create a life changing experience, and to aid in building confidence in those who feel less confident in themselves. My favorite sessions to capture are my new born sessions because you get to capture them at their first stage of life, I also enjoy capturing family sessions because family is where memories start and it also allows family to come together.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

It is important to understand that everyone has a journey and a path that they must travel. Every individual’s path is different, and it is important that we embrace the curve balls life can present. 2022 started off as an exciting year as I was embarrassing a new city with a fresh start. Two weeks into the new year, my life changed forever and one my worst nightmares became my reality. My mom passed away unexpectedly just three days after my wedding anniversary. I was devastated, my heart was crushed, and I was numb to the world. My mom was gone, and nothing could have prepared me for such a lost at 29 years old. I considered giving up photography because the waves of grief can be overwhelming at times. My mother played such a significant roll in the birth of my business to include allowing me to capture our family photos just a year before her passing. It was a tough battle, but I gripped enough strength to get through with the help of God , encouragement and prayers of my husband, family, loved ones and my church family. God has been the ultimate source of my strength.  I came to the realization that giving up would have been an insult to my moms memory. When I think of my mom I remember her working hard, persevering and never giving up.  Through the passing of my mother  my life and business has developed a new meaning , and I don’t take photography sessions for granted. I take great joy and helping every client I encounter create memories because they indeed last a lifetime.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

My most effective strategy for growing my clientele is to continue to perfect my craft and provide quality service to all clients. I try to create a comfortable environment for all my clients to be themselves while remaining professional, courteous, and maintaining exceptional business practices. I also believe in connecting with my clients such as supporting them in their endeavors or businesses which allows me to help them and apart if there dreams becoming a reality.
