We were lucky to catch up with Sheirra Haines recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sheirra, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I Mend Brokenness LLC comes from a place of power and position. It’s a Kingdom establishment that started with me. In 2007 I was sentenced to 18 months inside of Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW). At the time I was pregnant with my third child, who was able to stay with me in the nursery program during my prison sentence. It was there, inside those walls that I believe I Mend Brokenness was birthed. It started with me in my low place, broken with no where to go but up.
I dedicated my life to Christ, and opened my heart to begin my personal journey of mending brokenness.
Upon release I returned home to Youngstown, Ohio. After realizing that if I was ever going to be successful then I needed to change my environment.
In 2011, I moved to Columbus, Ohio where I currently reside with my family. Since being in Columbus I’ve had the opportunity to work inside the correctional facility as a Resident Monitor where I first began to teach the Mending Brokenness soul piece to incarcerated women.
In 2019 I Mend Brokenness LLC was founded, a speaking and coaching company that strives to teach women practical tools in order to redesign their lives to live a life unapologetically of purpose and power.
Sheirra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Break free. Mend brokenness. Heal your heart. Transform your life. But first, God. This is both the testimony and mission of the life of Sheirra Haines. After surviving domestic violence, overcoming drug addiction, and thriving post-incarceration, Sheirra knows that with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). However, Sheirra takes this knowledge beyond just self-awareness and has elevated it to a level of application and inspiration for others.
As a Life Coach, motivational speaker, author, and advocate, Sheirra has packaged her life experiences into a powerful Ministry titled Mending Brokenness. Sheirra founded I Mend Brokenness LLC to inspire women to abandon the lies that keep them in bondage and to trade self-sabotaging behaviors for a life of freedom by embracing and owning God’s Truth. Motivated by her own experiences developing self-awareness and breaking free from past hurt Sheirra teaches women how to mend broken relationships and establish positive relationships.
As a mother to four children and with personal experiences in the prison system, Sheirra recognized the reverberating impacts incarceration can have on a family. It was during her time of incarceration Sheirra purposed in her heart and mind that delivering a child inside of prison would be the last time she would allow external influences to direct her life. In this moment of reckoning, Sheirra relinquished responsibility for her life by fully surrendering to God. This life-changing decision helped to build Sheirra’s Christ-centered identity as well as her desire to redesign herself within the image of God.
As a result of these experiences, Sheirra has been committed to empowering incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women. Through I Mend Brokenness of Columbus, Ohio, Sheirra is actively engaged in decreasing recidivism rates through education and mentoring. In addition, Sheirra teaches a Mending Brokenness Soul Piece for women who desire to live an unapologetic life of purpose and power, but who lack the tools and guidance to do so. By overcoming so many of life’s toughest obstacles, Sheirra has developed a burning desire to see women soar beyond their challenges. She is committed to seeing women Break free. Mend their brokenness. Heal their hearts. and Transform their life. But first, God.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
To give a little context, when I returned home after serving my 18 month prison sentence, I had some challenges with my first born, my son. Because of the decisions I made before incarceration, he decided to take on my old way of thinking and ended up having to serve an adult prison sentence at the age of 15.The same week my oldest two children’s father loss his earthly battle to cancer. And, once again, I felt weak, I was broken, I felt cheated and I was hurt. I started drinking. One night I was pulled over under the influence and caught a OVI. I loss my job a year later at the correctional facility for not reporting the OVI. (That was a horrible experience for me) I knew that mending brokenness was my purpose and I felt alive every time I was able to educate, equip, and empower another woman. I knew that although I had fallen God’s word concerning me had not changed. I began Mending Brokenness Soul Sessions in the community. And in spite of the fall I founded I Mend Brokenness LLC.
I understand that trying to be perfect doesn’t really help anyone, not you and certainly not others. I could’ve allowed guilt and shame to win, but instead I lifted my head back up and allowed it to become a part of my story. These women that are incarcerated need to know that they will fail, mistakes will happen, and people may not always believe in you. That’s when it’s on you to know who you are, and in what ways you can impact the earth. Come into agreement with God and build the business anyway.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Simply put, it’s not enough to quote scriptures, say affirmations, make cute little vision board, and make declarations all day. There’s real work that has to be done in order for you to be successful. There’s no such thing as an overnight success. It’s a journey, there’s a lot of undoing and unlearning that has to take place in order for you to evolve into the woman God created you to be.
