Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sheila Nazarian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sheila thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I started my practice in 2013. I graduated at the age of 33 from plastic surgery residency at USC. I spent the first 6 months building out an office space that I shared with my husband, a neurosurgeon. We were sharing rent, which was a big help. It took 18 months for the phone to start consistently ringing but I had a decent flow of patients before that to support my initial efforts. Every penny I earned was put back into the practice in advertising and device acquisition. I think the big learning points and mistakes from that time was not hiring the best staff. I was limited in funds so I hired only people I could afford, it took a while to learn to hire the best people learn how to keep them. It is still a lesson I am learning.

Sheila, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Dr. Sheila Nazarian and I am a plastic surgeon. I have a Netflix show called Skin Decision: Before and After, which you should definitely binge! I am also on Instagram @drsheilanazarian @themodelsurgeon @spa26 @theskinspot. We are literally a one-stop destination for all things surgical, non-surgical, and skincare. We have 30 devices and lasers, all injectables, and value natural surgical and non-surgical results.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My family escaped from Islamic Republic of Iran when I was 7 years old. My parents didn’t see a future for their two daughters there. I came to the US not speaking any English and was quite the nerd growing up (which I am grateful for now). I lost my mom at the age of 16 to breast cancer. My whole life has been about resilience when I think about it.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn two things. 1. Don’t care what people think or say about you. Stick to your core values and listen to your gut.
2. You can’t have people obsessed with you unless you have some people who hate your guts. Take a side.
