We recently connected with Sheila Demoura and have shared our conversation below.
Sheila, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learn by doing! Ask all the questions. Take initiative. The most essential skills become your instincts and can’t be taught, just dive in and don’t be afraid of looking dumb.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Sheila, I became an artist manager a little over 7 years ago and have been working in the music industry for the past decade. I now represent multi platinum artists and have worked with many talented artists over the years in the genresof electronic, pop. and alternative.
People always ask what it means to be an artist manager and the best way I can describe it is being the artists right hand, you’re essentially the co-CEO of their business and help to advise them every step of the way while overseeing their team and running every aspect of their business.
I’m most proud of working with artists who are good people and knowing that my work with them impacts their art in a positive way, therefore impacting their fans positively. I love thinking about the ripple effect of my impact.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I graduated college despite having interned at a radio station, management company, and major label – I couldn’t seem to get a job in the music industry that excited me. I got hired at Madison Square Garden and turned it down. I decided to get a job waitressing somewhere where I may run into someone working in music, so I joined Tao Group as a server at Beauty and Essex in the Lower East Side. One day I was waiting on a table where they mentioned Paradigm (booking agency now called Wasserman) and I instantly perked up. I asked the three gentlemen if I could send my resume because I had applied there, and one of the men at the table appreciated my initiative enough to offer me an interview to be his Executive Assistant for his independent label, Cinematic Music Group. So despite not being able to find my way into the business or get my foot in the door even with my college internships, I was resilient enough to still find a way. From there it still wasn’t easy to get where I am today, but this was the first step.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Providing a medium for people to connect more deeply with themselves and each other.
