We recently connected with Sheila Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Sheila, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
As a Midwife supporting women and families, I have been honored to be included in the journey of labor and birth. Watching a woman find her strength, develop her voice, and bring forth her child is always an exhilarating defining moment of my life and career. Being “with woman” can look like many things. Listening to her personal unique story, tuning in to her personal needs is a hallmark of my practice.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Blessed Joy Midwifery offers women individual care with an emphasis on relationships. It is an important aspect of the care we provide to offer compassionate listening, informed decision making with our clients, and opportunity to learn of past experiences that could impact her care with us. We offer hour long visits to build relationships and incorporate mind, body, spirit and soul into the care we provide.
We are a trauma informed Midwife team and are respectful of women’s choices regarding testing, procedures and all aspects of care.
We offer VBAC, waterbirth, prenatal care, breastfeeding, childbirth education, and breastfeeding support. Birth Center or homebirth is available.
Included in care is bloodwork and childbirth education. Ultrasound can be scheduled through our Center.
Midwifery care is of course about health and wellness for pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum. It is also about continuing to be a resource, advocate, and integral part of postpartum community and health. We continue to be so honored by return clients and the long lasting relationships we establish from families stopping in just to say hi!

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
When managing a team I feel it’s important to remain humble. I have learned that just because my experience was a particular way, does not mean I must stay set in that pattern.
Having open communication with your team, willing to hear their opinions and perspectives, connects the team as a whole. Stepping out of your emotions and looking objectively at how you respond and handle situations brings growth. Personal and business growth comes from humility. High morale can be kept by being willing to do what you ask of your team yourself, and keeping an open door policy.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is, the textbook birth is not always the birth story unfolding in front of you. Often times a woman is not following the template given in a book for pregnancy, labor, or birth. I had to unlearn book knowledge and trust the woman in front of me. What is she saying? What is her labor telling me? What does the baby communicate through movement, heartbeat, and patterns? Perhaps it’s like the books or, perhaps you pivot and take a different approach. I have learned that always seeking books or even other people’s opinions is not always better than trusting my own intuitive feelings, and most especially, what I hear from the Lord in prayer.
