We recently connected with Shefali Thomas and have shared our conversation below.

Shefali, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.

I think one of the biggest risks I have taken so far was leaving my established career as an architect in India to pursue opportunities in an unfamiliar country. With little knowledge about the way of life and architectural nuances, it was a leap of faith. Though it was a huge challenge initially to break into the tight circle of designers here, once I completed my Masters in Interior Design from Washington State University, doors began to open. Networking events and volunteer opportunities paved the way for recognition. And the biggest break for me personally was finding the right mentor in the industry. What I’ve learned from this experience is that passion and dedication transcend borders. Once you find your true passion, it doesn’t matter where you work, you will find your way.

Shefali, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

Certainly. I’m Shefali Thomas, the Owner and Principal Designer of Design & Elevate, a boutique interior design firm based in Seattle. Originally an architect from India, I ventured into interior design, seeing the intricate relationship between the two disciplines. I strongly believe both are interdependent and a deeper understanding of both fields has helped me solve daily design challenges.

My ethnic background inspires unique elements that fit into the lifestyle here to create beautiful and holistic spaces for my clients. I started in residential design over a decade ago and moved to commercial design as a member of the global design firm IA, based in Seattle. Now back in residential design, I love mixing colors and patterns to create fun and inviting spaces.

The heart of any design lies in understanding the people using the space. That’s what makes every project unique and customized to the client’s lifestyle. Interior design is a creative art form about finding the right combinations, not just the 1 great piece. A lot of thought and effort go into putting the right details together.

Design & Elevate aims to transform everyday spaces into serene sanctuaries through a 3-step design process that streamlines the journey, ensuring clients visualize and resonate with every detail. We provide all interior design services, from floor plans to design concepts, digital design presentations, sourcing, ordering and finally styling the space. Our designs and approach have garnered industry acclaim. For instance, our kitchen design for the Bothell residence project was honored with the Sherwin Williams Designer of the Month award.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

Both social media and word of mouth have been instrumental. Referrals from satisfied clients convince prospective customers to put their trust in my process. Social media offers a glimpse into the journey of each design project, and the work that goes behind the aesthetic pictures that people see and like. Sharing D&E transformation stories, behind-the-scenes insights and walkthroughs, especially through popular platforms like Instagram, has fostered a deeper connection with our audience.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

The onset of Covid was a turning point in my career. With the commercial design sector facing challenges, I embarked on a new journey by founding ‘Design & Elevate’. It was a huge transition from a design job in a corporate firm, now having to don multiple hats of sales, finance, operations and more. The entrepreneurial path certainly has its hurdles, but the joy of connecting with clients, solving their everyday problems and crafting their dream spaces makes it all worthwhile. The satisfaction of building personal sanctuaries has been unparalleled.
