We recently connected with SHef Tiffany Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, SHef Tiffany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
HerSHefness Kitchen & Catering is an idea I came up with after working for a catering company. While working for this company I became proficient in the day to day operations of catering business. From taking catering orders, ordering from different food vendors, delegating kitchen duties to staff, and sometimes be apart of serving staff for the event if needed. Being apart of this gave me the passion and fire to want to be in the service industry for myself. With this passion and my drive together I knew it would work. I also knew people loved my food so why not share my gift with others. Starting off I I did small and affordable events for friends of friends and started to fall even more in love with catering and being a part of my customers special events. A special part of my service is I like to sit down with my customers and build the menu for their event with them so that it will be exactly what they want.
SHef Tiffany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is SHef T. Miller SHef/Owner of HerShefness Kitchen & Catering born and raised in Raleigh, NC. I am a graduated of Jesse O. Sanderson High School class of 2002. I currently live in Zebulon with my two kids, Justice and Khloe. working at the Hilton Garden Inn as a line cook while running my own business. My favorite things are cooking, music(90s), and family. My favorite thing to cook is macaroni and cheese, which is one of the top sellers in my business. And my favorite thing to eat is chicken. Growing up I wanted to be an interior designer but at the age of 26 I decided to attended The Chefs Academy in Morrisville, NC where I started my culinary journey. One of the best memorable experience ever. After culinary school I worked and gained a lot of experience in the food service industry that I started my own catering/personal chef business, HerSHefness Kitchen & Catering. HerShefness Kitchen & Catering serves the Triad and surrounding areas offering a verity of cuisines for your catering event. Starting my own business from the bottom has not been easy but I have never given up when there was a no or no customers, I am still here and growing.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Doing everything on my own is a lesson I am currently having to unlearn. When starting my business of course it was manageable only for me to only be in the kitchen doing all the work myself. But after a few years of this it became the normal. Me doing everything by myself for my business. Now that my business is growing I need the help. So I am having to learn that its ok to hire help when needed. Its not only needed for me but my business swell to hire the help. So that my business will run efficiently and up to the standards of my customers.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
After culinary school I started a side hustle of selling plates to friends, friends of friends and different businesses. By creating this side hustle I was getting my name out there and people could taste my food to know I really could cook. With the feed back from customers that were buying I decided to make it a business. And still every now and then on a special occasion I will pop up with a creative menu for a plate sell for my customers to buy.
